Credit: NASA TV\/Spaceflight Now<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The day after a sky-lighting Florida launch, four astronauts aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule chased down the International Space Station Thursday and glided in for a problem-free docking, kicking off a half-year stay aboard the orbital outpost.<\/p>\n<p>Crew-3 commander Raja Chari, Thomas Marshburn, Kayla Barron and German astronaut Matthias Maurer began the close approach phase of a 22-hour rendezvous shortly after wakeup around 2 p.m. EST.<\/p>\n<p>Making its first flight, the fully automated Crew Dragon \u201cEndurance\u201d approached the station from behind and below, looping up to a point directly in front of the lab before moving in for docking at the Harmony module\u2019s forward port at 6:32 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>After leak checks, hatches were opened and Expedition 66 commander Anton Shkaplerov, cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov and NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei welcomed their new crewmates aboard with hugs and handshakes. A few minutes later, senior mangers passed along their congratulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t wait to see all the work you all are going to accomplish,\u201d Kathy Lueders, NASA\u2019s chief of spaceflight operations, told the astronauts. \u201cAnd I\u2019m looking forward to many, many more amazing experiences to come over the next six months while you all are there. Thank you again for your service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vande Hei, who\u2019s midway through nearly a full year aboard the station, said he was thrilled with the Crew-3 astronauts\u2019 arrival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you how happy I am to see these smiling faces,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery one of us, all seven of us are friends, and we\u2019re going to become even better friends as time goes on. And we\u2019ve got a lot of work to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this moment, we\u2019ve got 60 experiments in progress, and of course by the time we finish our time up here, we\u2019ll have participated in many more. The new folks on the crew have been handling the food just fantastic, we\u2019ve not had any disasters at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said astronauts are \u201cencouraged to play with our food\u201d and that \u201cwe\u2019ve already had some target practice with macadamia nuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, I\u2019d say we\u2019ve been fairly successful. Barron and Chari are members of an astronaut class nicknamed the \u201cTurtles\u201d while Marshburn was a \u201cPeacock.\u201d The German nickname added Maurer to the mix.<\/p>\n<p>As for the cuisine on board, \u201cwe spent a lot of our extra time in quarantine in the past week eating a lot,\u201d Barron said, \u201cso we\u2019re well prepared to come up here and eat a little bit more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the astronauts were obviously feeling good in the early hours of their adaptation to weightlessness, Chari requested a private medical conference, or PMC, when offered the option. \u201cWe\u2019ll take the PMC,\u201d he radioed flight controllers, \u201cwe do have a few things to report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NASA does not discuss astronaut medical issues and PMCs are just that, conducted in private.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>STORY WRITTEN FOR&nbsp;CBS NEWS&nbsp;&amp; USED WITH PERMISSION The newly-arrived Crew-3 astronauts, in blue suits, joined three other crew members at the International Space Station.
