The $500 million included in the Senate bill marks the latest commitment from lawmakers to sustain a program the Space Force sought to terminate. The consistent pattern across the House Armed Services Committee, the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, and now the Senate Armed Services Committee leaves the Space Force facing congressional direction to continue an effort it had moved to cancel.<\/p>\n
The dispute reflects a civil-military tension in which the service responsible for space is being told by lawmakers to keep building a satellite it does not want. The polar orbit’s role in tracking high-latitude missile launches makes the political stakes clear even where the technical arguments behind the cancellation are not public. If Congress keeps funding programs the Space Force wants to cancel, the service loses the ability to make its own strategic tradeoffs, a different kind of readiness problem.<\/p>\n
