The automated Crew Dragon capsule fired its own thrusters to escape the rocket before it disintegrated in an orange fireball high over Florida\u2019s Space Coast.<\/p>\n<p>After a one-day delay due to rough seas in the splashdown zone \u2014 and a two-and-a-half-hour hold Sunday to wait for improved winds \u2014 the Crew Dragon spacecraft lifted off on top of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 10:30 a.m. EST (1530 GMT) Sunday from pad 39A at Kennedy, the same launch pad once used by NASA\u2019s Saturn 5 moon rockets and space shuttles.<\/p>\n<p>The 215-foot-tall (65-meter) rocket flew off the launch pad powered by nine kerosene-fueled Merlin 1D engines and pitched on an easterly trajectory from the Florida spaceport.<\/p>\n<p>The Falcon 9 surpassed the speed of sound in less than a minute, and the Crew Dragon\u2019s pre-programmed escape sequence initiated around 84 seconds after liftoff, when the rocket was at an altitude of roughly 62,000 feet (19 kilometers).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43040\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43040\" style=\"width: 2999px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43040\" src=\"http:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/991EEB00-9B73-4628-BD8A-5A1A52C43CAD.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2999\" height=\"1999\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/991EEB00-9B73-4628-BD8A-5A1A52C43CAD.jpeg 2999w, https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/991EEB00-9B73-4628-BD8A-5A1A52C43CAD-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/991EEB00-9B73-4628-BD8A-5A1A52C43CAD-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/991EEB00-9B73-4628-BD8A-5A1A52C43CAD-678x452.jpeg 678w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2999px) 100vw, 2999px\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43040\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SpaceX\u2019s Falcon 9 booster disintegrated in a fireball \u2014 as expected \u2014 seconds after the Crew Dragon capsule fired away from the top of the rocket in an in-flight escape demonstration Sunday.
