An Ariane 5 rocket emerged from the final assembly building at the Guiana Space Center in South America on Monday for the journey across the tropical spaceport to the ELA-3 launch zone, where the 179-foot-tall (54.8-meter) booster will lift off Tuesday with a pair of commercial communications satellites.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s special about Tuesday\u2019s mission is that it will be the 100th launch of an Ariane 5 rocket since the European heavy-lifter debuted in 1996. It will also be the 300th mission managed under the auspices of Arianespace, which has overseen launches by the Ariane family of rockets, in addition to Soyuz and Vega rocket flights.<\/p>\n

Two U.S.-built communications satellites are fastened on top of the Ariane 5 rocket \u2014 the Horizons 3e broadband satellite developed under a joint venture between Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT of Japan, and the Azerspace 2\/Intelsat 38 television broadcast payload, a \u201ccondosat\u201d with capacity shared by Azerbaijan\u2019s national satellite operator and Intelsat.<\/p>\n
