Credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The head of the Russian space agency caused a stir last week when he said a hole drilled through the side of a Soyuz ferry ship docked to the International Space Station was the result of a deliberate act, \u201ceither on Earth or in space.\u201d Station commander Drew Feustel said Tuesday it most certainly did not happen in orbit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can unequivocally say that the crew had nothing to do with this on orbit, without a doubt, and I think it\u2019s actually a shame and somewhat embarrassing that anybody is wasting any time talking about something that the crew was involved in,\u201d Feustel told ABC News Tuesday in a space-to-ground interview .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only thing the crew did was react appropriately, follow our emergency procedures, eventually locate that leak and plugged the hole,\u201d he said. \u201cIn doing so, we assured the continued operation of the space station, we ensured the ability of our crew all to remain on orbit and continue doing the great work that we do \u2026 on the International Space Station.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flight controllers in Houston and Moscow noted a small drop in the station\u2019s internal air pressure Aug. 29. Credit: NASA via RT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev and Soyuz MS-09 commander Sergey Prokopyev eventually sealed the breach with cloth soaked in epoxy. Cabin pressure has remained stable since then and in any case, the crew was never in any immediate danger. The upper compartment of the Soyuz is discarded before atmospheric entry and it can be sealed off after the crew is aboard if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, photographs clearly showed multiple scars apparently caused by a drill bit and one small hole that was plugged by the cosmonauts.<\/p>\n<p>Russian media reports initially said someone on the ground likely drilled the hole before launch for some unknown reason and then applied a temporary patch that later gave way in space.<\/p>\n<p>But Dmitry Rogozin, director general of Roscosmos, the Russian federal space agency, said \u201cwe are considering all theories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In translated remarks, he said \u201cit is a matter of honor for Energy Rocket and Space Corporation (Soyuz builder RSC Energia) to find the one responsible for that, to find out whether it was an accidental defect or a deliberate spoilage, and where it was done \u2013 either on Earth or in space.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34436\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34436\" src=\"http:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dmf-EgdW4AE6E82.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dmf-EgdW4AE6E82.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dmf-EgdW4AE6E82-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dmf-EgdW4AE6E82-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Dmf-EgdW4AE6E82-678x452.jpg 678w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dmitry Rogozin, chief of Roscosmos, is pictured here (in brown) inspecting Russian space facilities. Credit: Roscosmos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While flatly denying any action by the crew in space, Feustel said discovering the leak \u201cwas certainly a shock to all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that the investigations really do discover what occurred that caused this clearly man-made hole in the side of the spacecraft,\u201d he told ABC News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s going to be a story we\u2019re going to hear about for some time to come,\u201d he said. \u201cWe certainly don\u2019t want to ever see that happen again, and I hope the teams on the ground do proper due diligence in trying to solve this problem because the implications are enormous to the whole space program, not only to us in the U.S. but also in Russia and internationally for all the partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the crew did a \u201cgreat job\u201d finding and plugging the leak and he thanked flight controllers in Moscow and Houston for \u201csupporting us when this all happened and helping us maintain our composure and our complete and effective and efficient response to the emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>STORY WRITTEN FOR&nbsp;CBS NEWS&nbsp;&amp; USED WITH PERMISSION Drew Feustel, commander of the space station\u2019s Expedition 56 crew, works with an experiment in this image from July.
