{"id":14065,"date":"2018-01-18T00:57:28","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T16:57:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/japanese-radar-satellite-launched-aboard-third-epsilon-booster\/"},"modified":"2018-01-18T00:57:28","modified_gmt":"2018-01-17T16:57:28","slug":"japanese-radar-satellite-launched-aboard-third-epsilon-booster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/japanese-radar-satellite-launched-aboard-third-epsilon-booster\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese radar satellite launched aboard third Epsilon booster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"678\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U2qZjFZH3x4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s Epsilon rocket delivered a civilian-operated radar imaging satellite to orbit Wednesday on a mission to demonstrate the performance of a new commercial spacecraft design and collect all-weather imagery for use in emergencies, mapping and global surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>Developed by NEC Corp., the ASNARO 2 satellite launched Wednesday was developed with $144 million from the Japanese government, an investment aimed at crafting a new Japanese-built satellite platform for sale on the international market.<\/p>\n<p>The 1,256-pound (570-kilogram) ASNARO 2 spacecraft lifted off at 2106:11 GMT (4:06:11 p.m. EST) Wednesday from a hillside launch pad at the Uchinoura Space Center overlooking the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Liftoff occurred at 6:06 a.m. Thursday Japan Standard Time.<\/p>\n<p>The launch was delayed a day due to the threat of lightning at the space center, and from November to resolve an electrical problem on the Epsilon launcher.<\/p>\n<p>A solid-fueled first stage motor powered the 85-foot-tall (26-meter) Epsilon rocket skyward with a half-million pounds of thrust, accelerating the launcher to a speed of more than 4,200 mph (1.9 kilometers per second) in less than two minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The Epsilon\u2019s first stage, derived from the solid rocket boosters used on Japan\u2019s larger H-2A launcher, jettisoned around two-and-a-half minutes into the flight, moments after the rocket\u2019s payload shroud fell away as it climbed into the rarefied upper atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Two more solid-fueled rocket motors, the Epsilon\u2019s second and third stages, fired in succession to send the launcher on a trajectory arcing to the south from Uchinoura, a space base on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth stage engine consuming hydrazine fuel ignited two times to maneuver the ASNARO 2 spacecraft into orbit. The rocket aimed to deploy the satellite 52 minutes after liftoff at an altitude of more than 310 miles (500 kilometers) in an orbit tilted 97.4 degrees to the equator.<\/p>\n<p>The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency confirmed the flight\u2019s successful outcome in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe launch and flight of Epsilon-3 took place normally,\u201d JAXA said in a statement. \u201cApproximately 52 minutes 35 seconds into the flight, the separation of ASNARO 2 proceeded, with confirmation as successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29771\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29771\" style=\"width: 675px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29771\" src=\"http:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/b779232aec035ffc64d3a7a10fd67a63.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"1013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/b779232aec035ffc64d3a7a10fd67a63.jpg 675w, https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/b779232aec035ffc64d3a7a10fd67a63-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29771\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Japanese Epsilon rocket lifted off at 2106 GMT (4:06 p.m. EST) Wednesday with the ASNARO 2 radar satellite. Credit: JAXA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s mission was the third flight of an Epsilon rocket, a light-class booster developed by JAXA to replace Japan\u2019s M-5 rocket family.<\/p>\n<p>Developed in partnership with lead contractor IHI Aerospace, the Epsilon rocket takes off from the M-5\u2019s previous launch pad at Uchinoura, and can send up to 1,300 pounds (590 kilograms) into a polar sun-synchronous orbit around 300 miles (500 kilometers) above Earth, a common destination for Earth observation satellites.<\/p>\n<p>The Epsilon rounds out Japan\u2019s launcher fleet alongside the heavier-lifting H-2A and H-2B rockets.<\/p>\n<p>Two previous Epsilon missions in September 2013 and December 2016 were successful. With Wednesday\u2019s launch, the Epsilon is three-for-three.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth Epsilon flight is planned in late 2018 to loft multiple small Japanese satellites into orbit.<\/p>\n<p>The ASNARO 2 satellite is beginning a five-year mission for NEC Corp. and Japan Space Systems, an organization founded and funded by Japan\u2019s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.<\/p>\n<p>The project is the second for the ASNARO program, which stands for Advanced Satellite with New System ARchitecture for Observation.<\/p>\n<p>The ASNARO 1 satellite launched on a Russian-Ukrainian Dnepr rocket in 2014 carried an optical Earth-imaging camera, while ASNARO 2 hosts an X-band radar instrument. Credit: NEC Corp.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said it \u201chas been promoting the ASNARO project, an effort for developing Earth observation satellites which excel in fast delivery, high performance, compact and low price, and aims to fortify the competitiveness of Japan\u2019s space industry and expand its industries in which related technologies are utilized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ASNARO 2\u2019s high-resolution radar payload can resolve objects on the ground as small as 3 feet, or about 1 meter.
