Credit: JAXA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A Japanese space probe picked up just the right amount of speed when it flew by Earth earlier this month, using the planet\u2019s gravity to slingshot toward an asteroid scientists think is a primordial leftover from the ancient solar system, mission managers said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The Hayabusa 2 spacecraft passed about 3,090 kilometers (1,920 miles) above the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian islands Dec. 3, returning to Earth\u2019s vicinity exactly one year after its launch from Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Ground controllers intended to use Earth\u2019s gravity to give the Hayabusa 2 spacecraft a boost, bending its trajectory to intercept asteroid Ryugu in June 2018 with the help of further steering impulses from the probe\u2019s ion propulsion system.<\/p>\n<p>Planetary flybys enable spacecraft to reach destinations that would otherwise require bigger rockets, raising mission costs and complexity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11369\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-11369\" src=\"http:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/20151214_hayabusa2_1.jpg\" alt=\"Credit: JAXA\" width=\"620\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/20151214_hayabusa2_1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/20151214_hayabusa2_1-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: JAXA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The results of the flyby showed Hayabusa 2 is on the correct path after the Dec. 3 encounter, which turned the probe\u2019s orbit by about 80 degrees and increased its speed 1.6 kilometers per second (3,579 mph) relative to the sun\u2019s position, according to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA.<\/p>\n<p>The extra speed will propel Hayabusa 2 outward from Earth\u2019s orbit toward Ryugu, a near-Earth asteroid that spends most of its time farther from the sun than Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Hayabusa 2 is in good health after the Earth flyby, JAXA said in a press release Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to express my deep gratitude to all pertinent parties and people and those who are supporting our operation,\u201d said Yuichi Tsuda, Hayabusa 2\u2019s project manager. \u201cAll the Hayabusa 2 project team members have been working together and will continue our challenging voyage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11367\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11367\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-11367\" src=\"http:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/20151214_hayabusa2_2.jpg\" alt=\"Hayabusa 2's optical navigation camera took this picture of Earth after its flyby, showing a color view of Antarctica and Australia. Credit: JAXA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe Hayabusa 2 gained orbit energy through the swing-by to leave the Earth,\u201d Tsuda said in a statement. \u201cThe target is the asteroid Ryugu. \u2018See you later, people on Earth!&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As of late Sunday, U.S. time, the Hayabusa 2 spacecraft was 4.15 million kilometers (2.6 million miles) from Earth, about 10 times the distance of the moon.<\/p>\n<p>Hayabusa 2 will spend about a year-and-a-half in the vicinity of asteroid Ryugu beginning in mid-2018, dropping four small landers \u2014 three from Japan and one from Germany \u2014 to the asteroid\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p>The main spacecraft itself will descend to the 900-meter (3,000-foot) asteroid several times, scooping up bits of rock for collection into a chamber. Credit: JAXA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hayabusa 2 is Japan\u2019s second asteroid sample return mission.<\/p>\n<p>The Hayabusa spacecraft visited asteroid Itokawa in 2005, but technical problems prevented the spacecraft from gathering the intended samples.
