{"id":15944,"date":"2015-11-06T01:23:10","date_gmt":"2015-11-05T17:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/solar-wind-blasting-away-martian-atmosphere\/"},"modified":"2015-11-06T01:23:10","modified_gmt":"2015-11-05T17:23:10","slug":"solar-wind-blasting-away-martian-atmosphere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/solar-wind-blasting-away-martian-atmosphere\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar wind blasting away Martian atmosphere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STORY WRITTEN FOR&nbsp;CBS NEWS&nbsp;&amp; USED WITH PERMISSION<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"678\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gX5JCYBZpcg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The solar wind, the million-mile-per-hour stream of charged particles blasted away from the sun, is slowly but surely stripping away Mars\u2019 atmosphere and likely played a major role in turning the red planet from a habitable world in the distant past into the dry, frozen wasteland seen today, scientists said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Using data from NASA\u2019s $671 million MAVEN Mars orbiter, which has been studying the martian atmosphere since its arrival in September 2014, researchers have collected definitive data showing precisely how much gas is being stripped away by interactions with the solar wind.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, Mars is losing about 100 grams \u2014 a quarter pound \u2014 of gas every second due to the solar wind in a process that increases dramatically during major solar storms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen one of these solar storms passes by and engulfs the planet \u2026 the escape rates go up, and they go up by a factor of 10 to 20 at least,\u201d said David Brain, a MAVEN co-investigator at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado at Boulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSolar storms were more common and more intense earlier in solar system history. So, long ago, we expect escape to have been happening all the time and stripping away lots of atmosphere from the planet. This implies that not only is the Mars atmosphere escaping today, but much of that atmosphere may have been lost early on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The MAVEN data were published Thursday in the journals Science and Geophysical Research Letters.<\/p>\n<p>The solar wind is made up primarily of positively charged protons, negatively charged electrons and alpha particles, or helium nuclei, embedded in a magnetic field. As the solar wind hits the martian atmosphere, the magnetic field can generate an electric field that, in turn, can accelerate electrically charged ions in the martian atmosphere, kicking them into space.<\/p>\n<p>Changes in solar activity directly influence the rate of atmospheric loss. Credits: NASA\/GSFC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As it is, the MAVEN data show three zones where the atmosphere is leaking away. About 75 percent of the loss comes from the region \u201cdownwind\u201d of Mars where the solar wind sweeps around the planet and tails off into space. Another 25 percent comes from polar plumes and a tiny fraction escapes from an extended cloud of gas around the planet.<\/p>\n<p>A variety of spacecraft have shown that Mars once hosted a habitable environment with a much thicker atmosphere and lakes, rivers and possibly oceans of standing water on its surface. Whether or not life ever evolved on the red planet is an open question, but scientists believe the the environment was habitable in the distant past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s planet is a cold, dry desert-like environment, the atmosphere is thin, it\u2019s not capable of sustaining liquid water at the surface today, it would either freeze or evaporate very quickly,\u201d said Bruce Jakosky, the MAVEN principal investigator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, when we look at ancient Mars we see a different type of surface, one that had valleys that look like they were carved by water, lakes that were standing for long periods of time, we see an environment that was much more able to support liquid water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The martian climate must have been very different, he said, much warmer and wetter \u201cand the atmosphere must have been thicker at that time in order to sustain a warmer climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what happened to the carbon dioxide from that early atmosphere? Credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The martian atmosphere today is less than 1 percent as thick as Earth\u2019s. To change Mars from a habitable world with liquid water on the surface to the planet seen today, the atmosphere would have had to be stripped away at rates 100 to 1,000 times higher than what\u2019s seen today.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists believe Mars once had a global magnetic field like Earth\u2019s that initially shielded the atmosphere from many of the effects of the solar wind.
