{"id":16862,"date":"2014-11-06T23:40:25","date_gmt":"2014-11-06T15:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/japanese-satellites-launched-on-soviet-era-missile\/"},"modified":"2014-11-06T23:40:25","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T15:40:25","slug":"japanese-satellites-launched-on-soviet-era-missile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/japanese-satellites-launched-on-soviet-era-missile\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese satellites launched on Soviet-era missile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"678\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iM5j2MnLWpg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A decommissioned Soviet-era ballistic missile \u2014 adapted for space launches instead of nuclear war \u2014 rocketed out of an underground silo and sent five Japanese Earth observing satellites into orbit Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The 111-foot-tall Dnepr rocket fired out of a missile silo at the Dombarovsky military base in southern Russia at 0735 GMT (2:35 a.m. EST; 10:35 a.m. Moscow time) and deployed its passenger spacecraft in orbit nearly 14 minutes later, according to Kosmotras, a Moscow-based company with joint Russian-Ukrainian ownership that oversees the commercial exploitation of the launcher.<\/p>\n<p>The rocket is a modified R-36M missile developed in Ukraine. The Western designation for the missile is the SS-18 \u201cSatan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe launch was executed by the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces of the Russian Ministry of Defense with the support of the Russian, Ukrainian and Kazakhstan organizations which are part of the ISC Kosmotras industrial team,\u201d Kosmotras said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll spacecraft have been inserted into their target orbits,\u201d Kosmotras said.<\/p>\n<p>The mission\u2019s primary payload was a half-ton Earth observation satellite from Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Named ASNARO 1 \u2014 short for Advanced Satellite with New System Architecture for Observation \u2014 the spacecraft carries an optical camera that can resolve objects as small as a half-meter (20 inches) across. Credit: Japan Space Systems\/METI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Managed by Japan Space Systems \u2014 a government-chartered non-profit organization under contract to Japan\u2019s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry \u2014 the program\u2019s intention is to collect imagery comparable to data acquired by larger, more expensive Earth observing satellites.<\/p>\n<p>Japan hopes the ASNARO program will grow exports from the country\u2019s space industry, allowing it to compete with satellite manufacturers in Europe and Asia which have found success in selling small remote sensing spacecraft to developing countries wishing to possess independent surveillance capability from Earth orbit.<\/p>\n<p>The ASNARO satellites use commercial off-the-shelf components and streamlined test procedures to minimize costs, according to Japan Space Systems. Once in orbit, the satellites will operate autonomously.<\/p>\n<p>Japan is developing a second ASNARO satellite with an all-weather radar instrument to take images of the ground through clouds and darkness. Japan is providing Vietnam two more Earth observing satellites with X-band radars based on the ASNARO 2 craft through a foreign aid package signed in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry confirmed ground controllers received radio signals from the ASNARO 1 satellite a few minutes after Thursday\u2019s launch.<\/p>\n<p>Four smaller satellites launched Thursday on the Dnepr rocket.<\/p>\n<p>Developed by the University of Tokyo, the 132-pound Hodoyoshi 1 satellite will begin a mission to collect medium-resolution imagery of Earth. Nagoya University\u2019s 110-pound ChubuSat 1 spacecraft carries optical and infrared cameras to observe Earth and space debris.<\/p>\n<p>The Tsubame mission \u2014 led by the Tokyo Institute of Technology \u2014 will test gyroscopes for pointing control while conducting X-ray astronomy observations and demonstrating a compact camera to look down on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The cube-shaped QSAT-EOS satellite \u2014 weighing in at about 110 pounds \u2014 also launched Thursday to monitor disasters and vegetation from orbit.
