(Blue Origin via YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jeff Bezos\u2019 Blue Origin space venture sent six more people to the edge of space today \u2014 including the first husband-and-wife pair to make two trips together to the final frontier, and a science communicator who describes herself as \u201cthe Space Gal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The six spacefliers were launched from Blue Origin\u2019s Launch Site One in West Texas at 9:30 a.m. CT (7:30 a.m. PT) aboard the company\u2019s New Shepard suborbital rocket ship. They raised Blue Origin\u2019s tally of spacefliers to 47 \u2014 a number that now accounts for roughly 6% of all the humans who have flown into space,<\/p>\n<p>During the 10-minute flight, New Shepard\u2019s crew capsule rose just beyond 347,000 feet (105.8 kilometers, or 65.7 miles), which is just above the 100-kilometer Karman Line that serves as the internationally accepted boundary of space.<\/p>\n<p>While the capsule was floating to a parachute-assisted landing amid the Texas scrublands, New Shepard\u2019s booster flew itself back autonomously to a landing pad near the launch pad.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blue Origin NS-28 New Shepard launch and landing\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YyvGOhGecD4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The New Shepard program is nearly a decade old, and began flying crew members (including Bezos himself) in 2021. This was the program\u2019s 28th flight and the ninth crewed flight. The crew for the NS-28 mission included:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Marc and Sharon Hagle<\/strong>, who previously flew together on New Shepard in 2022. That flight made them the first married couple to launch on a commercial space vehicle. (NASA astronauts Jan Davis and Mark Lee were the first husband and wife to go into space simultaneously, but that\u2019s another story.) Today\u2019s flight qualified the Hagles as the first married couple to take two spaceflights together. Marc is a commercial property developer, while Sharon is the founder of an educational nonprofit group called SpaceKids Global.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emily Calandrelli<\/strong>, a science communicator who\u2019s the host of \u201cEmily\u2019s Wonder Lab\u201d on Netflix, \u201cXploration Outer Space\u201d on Fox TV stations and \u201cEmily\u2019s Science Lab\u201d on YouTube. Calandrelli was trained as an engineer at MIT and is the author of nine children\u2019s books about space and science. Today\u2019s trip made her the 100th woman to fly to space.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Austin Litteral<\/strong>, a risk management professional in the financial services industry. Litteral won his ticket to ride in a \u201cWhatnot to the Moon\u201d giveaway, sponsored by the Whatnot livestream shopping platform.<\/li>\n<li><strong>J.D. Russell<\/strong>, the founder of InfoHOA, a company specializing in tech-based community management solutions. Russell is also the founder of the Victoria Russell Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting children\u2019s education and assistance to the families of first responders.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hank Wolfond<\/strong>, chairman and CEO of Bayshore Capital in Toronto. Wolfond moonlights as a professional pilot on charter, medevac and organ retrieval flights. (Blue Origin via You Tube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the flight, Marc Hagle emerged from the capsule holding a flag emblazoned with the number \u201c2,\u201d referring to the Hagles\u2019 status as two-time spacefliers. One other Blue Origin client, Florida investor Evan Dick, is also a two-timer.<\/p>\n<p>Calandrelli was enthusiastic about the feeling she had when she saw Earth\u2019s expanse beneath the black sky of space. \u201cI kept saying, \u2018That\u2019s our planet. That\u2019s our planet,&#8217;\u201d she said. \u201cIt was the same feeling I had when my kids were born. I was like, \u2018That\u2019s my baby.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always moving to witness an astronaut crew return from space changed by their experience on New Shepard,\u201d Phil Joyce, Blue Origin\u2019s senior vice president for New Shepard, said in a post-mission statement. \u201cThis mission amplifies the importance of STEAM [science, technology, engineering, art and math] and inspiring the next generation, and we welcomed back two returning astronauts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blue Origin doesn\u2019t publicize the price for a New Shepard ride, but based on the Hagles\u2019 experience, it just might offer a discount for return customers.<\/p>\n<p>Standing beside his wife, Wolfond said he couldn\u2019t wait to fly again. \u201cShe\u2019s coming with me next time,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to do the Hagle thing.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Shepard\u2019s booster lands at Blue Origin\u2019s Launch Site One in Texas.
