(GeekWire Photo \/ Alan Boyle)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lauren Sanchez is planning to follow in the footsteps of her billionaire boyfriend, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, by taking a trip aboard the suborbital rocket ship built by Bezos\u2019 Blue Origin space venture. And she plans to bring an all-female crew with her on the mission, which she hopes will take place by early 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez discussed the space mission, her experience as a helicopter pilot and a media producer \u2014 and her relationship with Bezos \u2014 in a wide-ranging interview published today by WSJ. Magazine. <\/p>\n<p>The relationship between Sanchez and Bezos \u2014 and Bezos\u2019 divorce from his wife MacKenzie Scott \u2014 fueled a wave of tabloid stories in 2019. Two years later, Bezos took a ride on Blue Origin\u2019s first crewed spaceflight with Sanchez watching from the wings. Sanchez said Bezos will be \u201ccheering us all on from the sidelines\u201d when she takes her turn aboard the New Shepard spaceship. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs much as he wants to go on this flight, I\u2019m going to have to hold him back,\u201d she told the magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez said her five crewmates will be \u201cwomen who are making a difference in the world and who are impactful and have a message to send.\u201d Their identities haven\u2019t yet been revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m super-excited about it. And a little nervous,\u201d Sanchez said of the planned flight. \u201cI\u2019ve wanted to be in the rocket from the jump, so [Bezos] is excited to make this happen with all of these women. It\u2019s funny what he said the other day: \u2018Fly fast; take chances.\u2019 That\u2019s his motto. He\u2019s very encouraging and excited, and he\u2019s thrilled we\u2019re putting this group together.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Amazon founder Jeff Bezos says he'll give away his wealth\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rfU1FGu6taI?start=187&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Sanchez and her crewmates will have to wait until the Federal Aviation Administration gives the all-clear for future New Shepard launches. The most recent mission, an uncrewed research flight, ended in failure last September when the booster experienced an in-flight anomaly. <\/p>\n<p>Blue Origin said that if people had been on board, they would have had a rough but survivable ride, thanks to the crew capsule\u2019s rocket-powered escape system. New Shepard launches have been suspended until the post-mission investigation is complete. No information about the anomaly\u2019s cause has been released.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other tidbits from the interview:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sanchez has started up a new production company, called Adventure &amp; Fellowship, that will develop documentaries and scripted projects. \u201cThey can be movies, commercials, documentaries,\u201d she said. (\u201cTo adventure and fellowship\u201d is said to be Bezos\u2019 favorite toast.)<\/li>\n<li>This year she\u2019s due to release her first children\u2019s book, \u201cFlynn, the Fly Who Flew,\u201d about a fly that takes a ride in a rocket ship. (For what it\u2019s worth, the book doesn\u2019t yet show up in an Amazon search.)<\/li>\n<li>Sanchez said she\u2019s getting a \u201cmaster class\u201d in management from Bezos: \u201cBiggest pieces of advice? I hold a lot of meetings and I would talk first in a meeting, and he goes, \u2018No, no, no. You\u2019re the boss. You talk last.
