(SpaceX Illustration)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>FOLLOW-UP: T-Mobile\u2019s coverage will get a big boost from SpaceX\u2019s Starlink satellites, starting with texts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CEOs of SpaceX and T-Mobile will join forces on Thursday to reveal how their companies will work together to increase wireless connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>Details about the announcement, set to be live-streamed at 7 p.m. CT (5 p.m. PT) from SpaceX\u2019s Starbase facility in South Texas, haven\u2019t been made public. But the plan seems likely to involve using SpaceX\u2019s Starlink satellite constellation and T-Mobile\u2019s cellular network to boost subscribers\u2019 access and both companies\u2019 fortunes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something special,\u201d SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Sievert, the CEO of Bellevue, Wash.-based T-Mobile, will join Musk for Thursday\u2019s presentation on YouTube:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SpaceX + T-Mobile Update\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qzli-Ww26Qs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Combining cellular and satellite access would give both companies an advantage in the market for voice, text and data connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past three years, SpaceX has launched more than 3,000 of its Starlink satellites, which are manufactured at the company\u2019s facility in Redmond, Wash. Starlink is said to have about 400,000 subscribers, even though the service is still in limited-availability mode.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, T-Mobile has more than 100 million subscribers for its services, including next-generation 5G connectivity. T-Mobile could open up new opportunities for expanding Starlink\u2019s reach, perhaps by using satellite links to augment T-Mobile\u2019s existing network and fill in coverage gaps. In return, Starlink could make use of T-Mobile\u2019s ground-based network.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Musk said SpaceX had \u201ctwo quite significant partnerships\u201d with major telecommunications companies, but couldn\u2019t reveal who they were. More recently, another signal of SpaceX\u2019s intentions came when the Federal Communications Commission gave its OK for Starlink to provide mobile internet service.<\/p>\n<p>Both T-Mobile and SpaceX are facing what could become an increasingly competitive market for broadband internet services. On the terrestrial wireless front, where 5G is the new frontier, T-Mobile has to fend off rivals including Verizon and AT&amp;T. And in the satellite broadband market, Starlink could face competition in low Earth orbit from OneWeb (which recently struck a merger deal with Eutelsat) and Amazon\u2019s yet-to-be-launched Project Kuiper network.<span style=\"font-size: revert;\"><\/span><\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An artist\u2019s conception shows Starlink satellites in orbit.
