(NASA \/ ESA \/ CSA \/ STScI)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A day after NASA showed how far the James Webb Space Telescope could dive into the cosmic frontier, scientists released additional pictures demonstrating the observatory\u2019s scientific breadth.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s data release highlighted the $10 billion telescope\u2019s ability to analyze planetary atmospheres and record scenes of stellar birth and death in unprecedented detail.<\/p>\n<p>The infrared images also demonstrated that the Webb Space Telescope\u2019s 21-foot-wide mirror is ready to provide sharp pictures from the very start. That comes in contrast to the Hubble Space Telescope\u2019s debut in 1990, when the initial images were marred by a flaw in its 7.8-foot-wide mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis telescope is working fantastically well,\u201d Mark McCaughrean, the European Space Agency\u2019s senior adviser for science and exploration, said today during NASA\u2019s Webb webcast.<\/p>\n<p>That raises hopes that the James Webb Space Telescope, also known as JWST, will deliver on its promise to revolutionize the study of phenomena ranging from the origins of the universe to the habitability of alien planets.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First Images From the James Webb Space Telescope (Official NASA Broadcast)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nmMRMIE3MGw?start=193&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p>One of JWST\u2019s early targets is the TRAPPIST-1 planetary system, which is 34 light-years from Earth. University of Washington astrobiologist Andrew Lincowski hopes to use the telescope to characterize the atmospheres of TRAPPIST-1\u2019s planets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I can say is, Wow!\u201d Lincowski told GeekWire in an email. \u201cJWST will observe deep into the universe. For planets, we look closer, and for rocky exoplanets, this will still be challenging. TRAPPIST-1 remains an excellent target, and in fact, between the observations for the telescope and instrument developers and the first round of proposals, all seven planets will be individually observed this year by JWST.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lincowski said this year\u2019s observations are just the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese first observations will begin to tease out the possibility of the existence of atmospheres on small planets outside our solar system,\u201d he wrote. \u201cAdditional observations will most likely be needed to confirm the presence of an atmosphere or lack thereof, or to confirm the presence of specific gases and attempt to constrain their abundances. With that information, we can assess the possibility of a temperate climate that could harbor life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s data release included a spectral analysis focusing on a different sort of planet \u2014 WASP-96 b, a \u201chot Jupiter\u201d that orbits a sunlike star roughly 1,150 light-years from Earth. The spectral signature of near-infrared light filtering through the planet\u2019s atmosphere indicated the presence of water vapor. The foreground galaxy, known as NGC 7320, is the farthest left galaxy of the grouping.<\/p>\n<p>JWST\u2019s near-infrared and mid-infrared views provide a view of Stephan\u2019s Quintet that\u2019s sharper than Hubble\u2019s version. The mid-infrared picture is particularly striking because it highlights the blast of light coming from the area around the supermassive black hole at the center of the uppermost galaxy, NGC 7319. JWST\u2019s infrared views reveal more of the structure than the Hubble view, and the mid-infrared observations clearly show that there\u2019s not just one, but two stars at the center of the nebula. Blistering radiation from the hot blue stars in the upper half of the image is eating away the clouds of dust in the lower half of the image. Thanks to the gravitational lensing effect of a galaxy cluster known as SMACS 0723, JWST\u2019s view includes views of thousands of more distant galaxies. <\/p>\n<p>Spectral analysis has shown that light from one of the galaxies traveled for 13.1 billion years before it was captured by the space telescope \u2014 and there may be even more distant galaxies in the picture.<\/p>\n<p>In an email, University of Washington astronomer Emily Levesque told GeekWire that all of today\u2019s images were \u201cmind-blowing&nbsp;and demonstrated the incredibly exciting new capabilities&nbsp;of JWST.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf forced to pick a favorite, I was actually particularly excited to see some more detailed data from the \u2018deep field\u2019 image,\u201d she said. \u201cOne incredibly powerful tool in astronomy is spectroscopy, observing light from a star or galaxy and then sorting it out by color to identify the object\u2019s unique chemical fingerprint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levesque said JWST\u2019s team demonstrated the power of spectroscopy by analyzing the light coming from the gravitationally lensed galaxies in the deep-field image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith these data, we\u2019ll be able to study the detailed chemistry and conditions present in some of the first galaxies in the universe, the same galaxies that hosted the births of some of the earliest stars,\u201d Leveque wrote. \u201cA lot of my colleagues and I were gasping to each other on Twitter that these observations would have taken hours \u2014 or simply been impossible! \u2014 in the pre-JWST era.
