(Blue Origin Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Starship Enterprise never had to delay its mission to seek out new life and new civilizations due to bad weather, but that\u2019s precisely what Star Trek captain William Shatner is facing in his real-life bid to become the world\u2019s oldest spaceflier aboard Blue Origin\u2019s suborbital rocket ship.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Origin, the space venture created by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, says the 90-year-old actor and his three shipmates are now due to fly on the company\u2019s New Shepard craft on Wednesday rather than Tuesday, due to a forecast for unacceptable winds at the West Texas launch site on the originally scheduled date.<\/p>\n<p>Shatner is already at Blue Origin\u2019s Launch Site One after flying in from the New York Comic Con. They would then make a parachute-aided descent while the craft\u2019s hydrogen-fueled rocket booster executes its own autonomous landing.<\/p>\n<p>The itinerary follows the pattern set for July\u2019s first-ever crewed New Shepard flight, taken on by Bezos and his brother Mark as well as Dutch student Oliver Daemen (at 18, the world\u2019s youngest spaceflier) and aviation pioneer Wally Funk (at 82, the current recordholder for oldest human in space).<\/p>\n<p>Shatner has already been making the rounds on the TV interview circuit. \u201cI\u2019m terrified,\u201d he said on NBC. \u201cI\u2019m Captain Kirk and I\u2019m terrified going to space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But on CNN, Shatner said he was looking forward to seeing \u201cthe majesty of space and the oasis of Earth.\u201d He also jokingly referred to one of his best-known roles from his pre-Kirk career, as a freaked-out airplane passenger on \u201cThe Twilight Zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to press my nose up against the plastic window,\u201d Shatner said. \u201cWhat I don\u2019t want to see is somebody else out there looking at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s launch is set for 8:30 a.m. CT (6:30 a.m. PT), with streaming video coverage due to begin via Blue Origin\u2019s website 90 minutes before liftoff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William Shatner stands with crewmates Chris Boshuizen (left), Audrey Powers and Glen de Vries, all clad in their flight suits for a Blue Origin suborbital space trip.
