In a statement on Monday, PLDT-Smart said these areas face the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and are known for pockets of limited&nbsp;terrestrial mobile coverage.<\/p>\n<p>During the field test, PLDT-Smart and Lynk engineers exchanged text messages between smartphones located in Ilocos Norte and Metro Manila, and accessed key public information platforms, including the websites of Smart, Department of Information and Communications Technology and Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration. The D2D technology is meant to serve as a complementary layer to PLDT-Smart\u2019s nationwide mobile network and is particularly valuable during natural disasters when terrestrial infrastructure is compromised.<\/p>\n<div class=\"widget-layout related-content-also-read-box my-3\">\n<h4 class=\"mb-0\">Also Read: What are Terrestrial Satellite Networks?<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p>PLDT chief operating officer and network head <strong>Menardo Jimenez<\/strong> said the D2D satellite technology would help overcome the challenges provided by the Philippines\u2019 archipelagic nature. \u201cD2D satellite technology gives PLDT and Smart a powerful way to overcome the geographic challenges of serving an archipelago. For us, this is no longer just about announcing partnerships, but about delivering real results for real communities. By testing where the technology truly matters, we are taking a step closer to providing reliable connectivity to every Filipino, no matter how remote their location,\u201d Jimenez said.<\/p>\n<p>National Telecommunications Commission Region I Director <strong><\/strong>Glenn Mercado<strong><\/strong> and Engr. Rolly Albiosa joined the PLDT-Smart and Lynk teams as observers in the field test. <em>\u201cAs with any emerging technology, there are areas that still need refinement. The latest test reinforces results from earlier tests conducted in Barangay Marambong in Pandan, Catanduanes in January.
