(Arch Mission Foundation Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Arch Mission Foundation is partnering with Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic to have a miniaturized library sent to the moon\u2019s surface aboard a lunar lander in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The Lunar Library will include a wide range of works&nbsp;\u2014 including the contents of Wikipedia and the Long Now Foundation\u2019s Rosetta Project, a library of the world\u2019s languages. The text will be printed on 20-micron-thick, stamp-sized sheets of nickel, using a laser etching technique that can produce letters as small as bacteria. (You\u2019d need a 1000x optical microscope to read the pages, but you wouldn\u2019t need a computer.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled the Arch Mission Foundation has selected Astrobotic. It\u2019s humbling to think our mission to the moon will deliver something that could be read millions of years from now,\u201d Astrobotic CEO&nbsp;John Thornton said today in a news release. \u201cArch\u2019s Lunar Library will be a monument not only to human knowledge and culture, but also the first commercial mission to the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Arch Mission Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/225512936?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" data-ratio=\"0.425\" data-width=\"800\" data-height=\"340\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px; width: 800px; height: 340px;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Astrobotic is aiming to send its Peregrine lander to the moon on a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket in 2020, potentially as part of NASA\u2019s reworked lunar exploration initiative. Because of its miniaturized design, the Lunar Library could fit 30 million pages in a thin cylindrical container about the size of a DVD.<\/p>\n<p>This wouldn\u2019t be the first library launched into space. SpaceX\u2019s Falcon Heavy rocket sent the Arch Mission\u2019s micro-printed copy of Isaac Asimov\u2019s Foundation Trilogy into deep space, packed along with the Starman mannequin aboard Elon Musk\u2019s Tesla Roadster.<\/p>\n<p>Arch Mission also has plans to send libraries to Mars and other cosmic locales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough massive replication around the solar system, we will be able to guarantee that the Arch Libraries will never be lost \u2014 even millions to billions of years in the future,\u201d said Nova Spivack, co-founder and chairman of the Arch Mission Foundation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lunar Library will be stored as microfiche images etched on stamp-sized squares of nickel.
