President Donald Trump today talked about creating a U.S. Space Force, breathing new life into a concept that\u2019s been proposed by lawmakers but opposed by Pentagon leaders.<\/p>\n

The subject of space policy came up during the president\u2019s visit to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California, while he was addressing a crowd of Marines. His comments had an off-the-cuff tone, and made it sound as if creating a military service focused on defending the space frontier was his idea:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are finally going to lead again \u2014 you see what\u2019s happening, you see the rockets going up left and right, you haven\u2019t seen that for a long time. Very soon we\u2019re going to Mars. You wouldn\u2019t have been going to Mars if my opponent won, that I can tell you. You wouldn\u2019t even be thinking about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy new national strategy for space recognizes that space is a warfighting domain, just like the land, air and sea. We may even have a Space Force \u2014 develop another one, Space Force. We have the Air Force, we\u2019ll have the Space Force. We have the Army, the Navy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, I was saying it the other day, because we\u2019re doing a tremendous amount of work in space, I said, \u2018Maybe we need a new force, we\u2019ll call it the Space Force.\u2019 And I was not really serious. And then I said, \u2018What a great idea, maybe we\u2019ll have to do that.\u2019 That could happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Trump said \u201cthat could be the breaking story\u201d from his Miramar stopover. Then he pointed to journalists covering the talk.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook at all those people there. \u2026 Ahhh, fake news.\u201d Trump told the Marines.<\/p>\n
