(Mattel Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHidden Figures\u201d mathematician Katherine Johnson may have missed out on the Lego toy treatment, but she and 16 other women are getting the Barbie doll treatment just in time for International Women\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>Today Mattel announced that it\u2019s rolling out 17 new Barbie dolls \u2014 including 14 one-of-a-kind dolls that are styled after modern-day role models for its \u201cShero\u201d program (a mashup of \u201cshe\u201d and \u201chero\u201d), plus a new line called \u201cInspiring Women\u201d that pays tribute to historical role models.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, a 99-year-old black mathematician whose work at NASA was featured in the hit movie \u201cHidden Figures,\u201d is included as one of the Inspiring Women, along with Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and pioneering American aviatrix Amelia Earhart.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"@Barbie | Barbie #MoreRoleModels\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A2oXWOyG9r8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-ratio=\"0.5625\" data-width=\"800\" data-height=\"450\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px; width: 800px; height: 450px;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>To mark International Women\u2019s Day on March 8, Mattel commissioned a survey of 8,000 mothers with daughters aged 10 or younger, and found that 81 percent of them worried about the types of role models their children were exposed to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to shine a light on real-life role models to remind them that they can be anything,\u201d Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and general manager for the Barbie line at Mattel, said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>In its sales blurb, Mattel says Johnson\u2019s Barbie \u201ccelebrates the achievements of a pioneer who broke through barriers of race and gender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson was also included in a set of five proposed Lego minifigures honoring women scientists and explorers associated with NASA. But the final set, released by Lego late last year, didn\u2019t include her. It eventually came out that Lego couldn\u2019t get the required approval from Johnson and her family.<\/p>\n<p>Did the fact that Johnson was destined for the Barbie doll treatment play a part in all that?
