Cloudy weather blocked Seattle\u2019s view of last night\u2019s \u201csuper blue blood moon\u201d \u2014 but as a consolation, skywatchers from Vancouver to Siberia shared their images of the total lunar eclipse.<\/p>\n

Total lunar eclipses arise when Earth\u2019s shadow falls fully over the moon, and the long-wavelength light that\u2019s refracted by our planet\u2019s atmosphere turns the full moon\u2019s disk a sunset-like shade of red.<\/p>\n

Last night\u2019s event received an extra burst of hype because it took place during a time when the moon is closer to Earth than usual (qualifying by some definitions as a \u201csupermoon\u201d), and because it was the second full moon in the course of a month (a so-called \u201cblue moon\u201d).<\/p>\n

Putting all these features together results in the super-blue-blood label, which NASA readily adopted. \u201cSounds like an opportunity for vampires,\u201d University of Washington astronomer Julie Lutz joked.<\/p>\n

Whatever you call it, the lunar eclipse is totally worth a recap \u2026<\/p>\n
