Here\u2019s how: Next year\u2019s batch of postage stamps will include a memorial to Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, as well as a four-stamp set paying tribute to science, technology, engineering and math (a.k.a. (USPS Illustration)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a statement from Sally Ride Science, the late astronaut\u2019s life partner, Tam O\u2019Shaughnessy, said \u201cit was a great pleasure\u201d to work with the Postal Service to create the Forever commemorative stamp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a young girl, Sally collected stamps,\u201d O\u2019Shaughnessy said. \u201cShe would be so honored to now appear on a stamp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ride rode into space on the shuttle Challenger in 1983 and 1984, and served on the presidential commission that investigated the Challenger shuttle disaster in 1986. She played a similar role in the investigation of the 2003 Columbia tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>Before joining the astronaut corps, she was trained as a physicist, and so she returned to academia after leaving NASA in 1987. She was one of the founders of Sally Ride Science, a program focused on STEM education, and played a key role in NASA\u2019s EarthKAM and MoonKAM&nbsp;educational imaging projects.<\/p>\n<p>Ride&nbsp;passed away in 2012 at the age of 61 after a 17-month battle against pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_384009\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-384009\" style=\"width: 191px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-384009\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/171213-biolumin-191x300.png\" alt=\"Bioluminescence stamps\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/171213-biolumin-191x300.png 191w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/171213-biolumin-630x989.png 630w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/171213-biolumin-200x314.png 200w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/171213-biolumin-64x100.png 64w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/171213-biolumin.png 639w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\"><figcaption data-nosnippet=\"\" id=\"caption-attachment-384009\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A 20-stamp pane will feature 10 life forms that create their own light. (USPS Illustration)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The STEM Forever stamps would have pleased Ride almost as much as her own stamp. Each stamp features a collage of faces, symbols, drawings and numbers keyed to the themes of science, technology, engineering and math. The \u201cTechnology\u201d stamp features a drawing of the Apollo spacecraft, while the \u201cEngineering\u201d stamp highlights a stylized computer chip.<\/p>\n<p>Yet another science-y series of stamps will show off 10 kinds of bioluminescent creatures, ranging from a firefly to a deep-sea octopus.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s lots more to look forward to, including stamps commemorating Mister Rogers, John Lennon, Lena Horne, the Year of the Dog \u2026 and magic tricks.
