(NASA via YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thanksgiving Day is a workday on the International Space Station, but it\u2019s still a special day for the station\u2019s six crew members \u2014 even for the ones who aren\u2019t American.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Italian, and we don\u2019t have Thanksgiving,\u201d the European Space Agency\u2019s Paolo Nespoli said in NASA\u2019s holiday video. \u201cIt\u2019s not that we don\u2019t say thanks, but we don\u2019t have the celebration of Thanksgiving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Except in orbit.<\/p>\n<p>The tasks on the Thanksgiving agenda include processing cargo that arrived last week aboard a robotic Cygnus spaceship. But at the end of the day, the three Americans on board\u2014 Randy Bresnik, Joe Acaba and Mark Vande Hei&nbsp;\u2014 will kick back with Nespoli and Russian cosmonauts Alexander Misurkin and Sergey Ryazansky.<\/p>\n<p>A traditional Thanksgiving space dinner will be put together from pouches. In addition to irradiated smoked turkey, the menu features mashed potatoes, cornbread dressing, candied yams, apple sauce to drink, and cranapple dessert as the capper.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Expedtion 53 Thanksgiving Message\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-bxpCgovA2U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-ratio=\"0.5625\" data-width=\"800\" data-height=\"450\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px; width: 800px; height: 450px;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The American spacefliers said they\u2019ll also check in with their families for the holidays via space-to-ground communication links.<\/p>\n<p>Being away from home for Thanksgiving is just part of the job for spacefliers. \u201cA lot of us, because of the military background, being an astronaut, we\u2019ve been away from home quite a bit,\u201d Acaba said.<\/p>\n<p>Bresnik was in orbit aboard the space shuttle Atlantis during his one previous spaceflight in 2009. \u201cCertainly the thought of a home-cooked meal is something that really appeals to me,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n<p>But the astronauts aren\u2019t complaining.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing anyplace where you\u2019re surrounded by friends really makes Thanksgiving special,\u201d Vande Hei said, \u201cand we certainly have that going on up here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bresnik is due to get home in mid-December, just in time for Christmas, while Acaba and Vande Hei will spend the whole holiday season in space and fly back to Earth in February.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Space station astronauts Joe Acaba, Randy Bresnik, Paolo Nespoli and Mark Vande Hei show off pouches filled with turkey, mashed potatoes and cornbread stuffing.
