(METI International Illustration \/ Danielle Futselaar)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scientists and artists have banded together to beam coded radio transmissions toward a star that has a potentially habitable planet, just 12.4 light-years from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cS\u00f3nar Calling&nbsp;GJ273b\u201d is the latest effort to communicate with aliens, 43 years since the first attempt was made using the 1,000-foot Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;\u201cS\u00f3nar Calling\u201d messages were sent on three successive days, Oct. 16-18, from the 32-meter EISCAT radio antenna in Troms\u00f8, Norway, just inside the Arctic Circle. Each transmission was directed at peak power of 2 megawatts toward a red dwarf star known as GJ273, or Luyten\u2019s Star, in the constellation Canis Major.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers say Luyten\u2019s Star harbors a planet that\u2019s more than twice as massive as Earth, in an orbit where water could conceivably exist in liquid form. \u201cS\u00f3nar Calling\u201d aims to communicate with any radio-savvy life forms on that planet, called GJ273 b.<\/p>\n<p>The effort is being undertaken by the organizers of Spain\u2019s S\u00f3nar music festival in Barcelona, the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia, and METI International, a San Francisco-based research organization that focuses on the issue of messaging extraterrestrial intelligence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_377439\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-377439\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full-width wp-image-377439\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/171115-eiscat-630x455.jpg\" alt=\"EISCAT antenna\" width=\"630\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/171115-eiscat-630x455.jpg 630w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/171115-eiscat-768x554.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/171115-eiscat-1260x910.jpg 1260w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/171115-eiscat.jpg 1485w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\"><figcaption data-nosnippet=\"\" id=\"caption-attachment-377439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The message was beamed from the 32-meter EISCAT UHF antenna in Tromso, Norway. (EISCAT via YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The message contains a tutorial for its recipients, said Douglas Vakoch, METI International\u2019s president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMETI\u2019s mathematical and scientific tutorial for \u2018S\u00f3nar Calling GJ273b\u2019 includes innovative features like a \u2018cosmic clock\u2019 that lets extraterrestrials confirm that their understanding of time from our scientific message maps onto the passage of time they can observe throughout the transmission itself,\u201d Vakoch told GeekWire in an email.<\/p>\n<p>The tutorial tries to explain the notion of radio frequency by sending signals as binary code at two frequencies, 929.0 MHz and 930.2 MHz. The code describes those frequencies in mathematical terms.<\/p>\n<p>EISCAT\u2019s antenna broadcast the binary code three times on each of the three days at a rate of 125 bits per second, adding up to a total transmission time of 33 minutes, Vakoch said. Each time, the cosmic-clock setting was changed to reflect the time of transmission.<\/p>\n<p>The message also included 33 musical pieces, each lasting 10 seconds, which were commissioned for the project as a tribute to the&nbsp;S\u00f3nar festival. The contributors include sound artist Holly Herndon, French composer Jean-Michel Jarre and the experimental electronic-music duo Matmos.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00f3nar\u2019s organizers are opening the project for public participation today.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Should Humans Try to Contact Alien Civilizations?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VRIeuuXIhxw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-ratio=\"0.5625\" data-width=\"800\" data-height=\"450\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px; width: 800px; height: 450px;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Vakoch said an expanded tutorial will be transmitted to GJ273b next April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will turn the EISCAT transmitter into a musical instrument, sending basic melodies by transmitting pulses at a series of different radio frequencies that maintain the same sort of intervals between one another that we see in the intervals between musical notes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>It might sound strange to try sending messages to the aliens in the form of music, but there are precedents for that.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the \u201cGolden Record\u201d that was placed on NASA\u2019s Voyager probes in the 1970s for the benefit of extraterrestrial passers-by included 27 musical selections from around the world. And in 2008, NASA beamed a Beatles song titled \u201cAcross the Universe\u201d toward Polaris to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the recording.<\/p>\n<p>Are such transmissions detectable? And if so, is it wise to send them? That\u2019s been a subject of debate among researchers focusing on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI, for many years.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Falan.boyle%2Fvideos%2F10159613263890217%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dan Wertheimer, chief scientist for the SETI program&nbsp;at the University of California at Berkeley, doesn\u2019t think sending messages to E.T. is a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the risks outweigh the benefits,\u201d he said last month at Berkeley during a panel organized by the World Conference of Science Journalists. \u201cYou\u2019re putting 7 billion people at risk. We don\u2019t know what\u2019s out there. \u2026 I think it\u2019s a small chance that E.T. is going to be violent, that they\u2019re going to come grind up our planet for rubidium or something. But nevertheless, you\u2019re putting 7 billion people at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seth Shostak, senior astronomer for the SETI Institute, said that if the aliens are listening, they\u2019ve probably already picked up the puny transmissions from us humans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you really think there\u2019s a potential of killing 7 billion people because the aliens get ticked off by hearing \u2018I Love Lucy\u2019 and send their interstellar battlewagons here to wipe us out, just in a fit of pique. \u2026 If you really think that, then you better turn off all radars&nbsp;\u2014 not for the weekend, not for this year, you better turn them off forever,\u201d Shostak said. \u201cAnd to me, that doesn\u2019t sound like a good idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assuming there is someone out there listening to the sounds of&nbsp;\u201cS\u00f3nar Calling GJ273b,\u201d we\u2019ll have 25 years to find out if they reply via radio.
