We may be one small step closer to that scenario.<\/p>\n<p>Today the U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs, or UNOOSA, called on its member states, and particularly developing countries, to come up with suggestions for 20 to 30 payloads that would go on an orbital space mission it\u2019s planning with Sierra Nevada Corp.<\/p>\n<p>SNC would fly the payloads&nbsp;\u2014 which could include scientific experiments as well as deployable satellites&nbsp;\u2014 aboard its Dream Chaser space plane during a two- to three-week flight.<\/p>\n<p>In its call for interest, UNOOSA said each payload should address at least one of the United Nations\u2019 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which range from eliminating poverty and hunger to producing affordable and clean energy.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s announcement follows up on last year\u2019s agreements between SNC and UNOOSA for a dedicated U.N. mission in the 2021 time frame. The project will help UNOOSA get a better sense of the demand for international space missions, and get a better feel for working with the private sector on space projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe benefits of a joint mission between government and private organizations on a level of this scale are incalculable,\u201d Mark Sirangelo, corporate vice president of SNC Space Systems, said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>Eren Ozmen, SNC\u2019s owner and president, talked up the idea of opening the space frontier to organizations that might not otherwise get there. \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to provide the vehicle that will make this happen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Sierra Nevada Corporation Dream Chaser Spacecraft Tow Test 2017\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jeMndeNG7cw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-ratio=\"0.5625\" data-width=\"800\" data-height=\"450\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px; width: 800px; height: 450px;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>SNC\u2019s Dream Chaser prototype is currently undergoing tests at NASA\u2019s Armstrong Flight Research Center in California. The current schedule calls for the Dream Chaser to begin flying robotic missions to orbit and back in 2020, with cargo resupply of the International Space Station serving as its primary mission.<\/p>\n<p>The Dream Chaser is designed to be sent to orbit on a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket, or perhaps a European Ariane 5 or Japanese H-2B rocket, and glide back down to a smooth runway landing at the mission\u2019s conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline for submitting suggestions is Nov. 1. A detailed announcement of opportunity is due to be issued next March after UNOOSA assesses the interest in the mission as well as the resources available to potential participants.<\/p>\n<p>UNOOSA Director Simonetta Di Pippo said the mission should produce a substantial scientific as well as economic payoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect our efforts in building industry capacity to have long-term impacts, especially in space-related science, technology, engineering and mathematics education programs, and that these results will flow to the wider economy as a whole,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An artist\u2019s conception shows Sierra Nevada Corp.\u2019s robotic Dream Chaser space plane in orbit.
