(Terra Bella Illustration)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Planet Labs says it has struck a deal to acquire Google\u2019s Terra Bella satellite imaging operation and its constellation of SkySat satellites, less than three years after Google bought the&nbsp;operation for $500 million.<\/p>\n<p>Financial terms for the acquisition weren\u2019t announced.<\/p>\n<p>The deal includes a multi-year contract under which San Francisco-based Planet would sell satellite data to Google.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve long admired what the&nbsp;the team at Terra Bella has achieved, and we think the SkySat constellation of 7 high-resolution satellites is highly complementary to Planet\u2019s existing medium resolution 60-satellite fleet,\u201d Will Marshall, Planet\u2019s co-founder and CEO said in today\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Terra Bella\u2019s satellites take pictures of selected areas of the globe at a resolution that\u2019s better than 1 meter per pixel, while Planet\u2019s Dove satellites provide global coverage at resolutions of 3 to 5 meters.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Looking Down From 600 km Above The Earth's Surface with HD Video (1080p HD)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BsW6IGc4tt0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-ratio=\"0.5625\" data-width=\"800\" data-height=\"450\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px; width: 800px; height: 450px;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Marshall said a number of Terra Bella employees would join Planet to continue their work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we thought about a company that shares Terra Bella\u2019s passion and strengths in high-frequency satellite imaging, Planet was a natural home,\u201d said Jen Fitzpatrick, Google\u2019s vice president of product and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Terra Bella had been known as Skybox Imaging before its acquisition by Google in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Most of Planet\u2019s more than 360 employees work in San Francisco, but the six-year-old startup also has offices in Germany, Canada, the Netherlands and in Bellevue, Wash. The Bellevue office, which was opened late last year, focuses on developing the software platform for distributing satellite imagery.<\/p>\n<p>Other Seattle-area satellite ventures include Spaceflight Industries and its BlackSky subsidiary, which is building up its own Earth-imaging constellation; and Planetary Resources, which is working on its Ceres satellites for Earth observation.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being a competitor, Spaceflight has served as one of Planet\u2019s launch facilitators.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An artist\u2019s conception shows Terra Bella\u2019s SkySat satelltes in orbit.
