(NASA Illustration)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NASA is committing $188 million to build and launch a space telescope to observe patterns in the X-ray radiation emanating from black holes, neutron stars and pulsars.<\/p>\n<p>The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, or IXPE, was chosen from a field of three finalists in NASA\u2019s Astrophysics Explorers Program, the space agency said today.<\/p>\n<p>IXPE\u2019s triple-telescope detector system is designed to check the polarization of cosmic X-rays. Paul Hertz, astrophysics division director for NASA Headquarters\u2019 Science Mission Directorate, said the mission should \u201copen a new window on the universe for astronomers to peer through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot directly image what\u2019s going on near objects like black holes and neutron stars, but studying the polarization of X-rays emitted from their surrounding environments reveals the physics of these enigmatic objects,\u201d Hertz said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>IXPE is due for launch in 2020.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_300236\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-300236\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full-width wp-image-300236\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/170103-ixpe-630x440.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/170103-ixpe-630x440.jpg 630w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/170103-ixpe-768x537.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/170103-ixpe.jpg 807w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\"><figcaption data-nosnippet=\"\" id=\"caption-attachment-300236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The IXPE probe takes advantage of three Italian-made X-ray detectors. (NASA Illustration)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The $188 million price tag includes the cost of the launch vehicle as well as mission operations and data analysis.&nbsp; Principal investigator Martin Weisskopf of NASA\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center will lead the mission. Ball Aerospace will provide the spacecraft and mission integration.&nbsp;The Italian Space Agency will contribute the X-ray detectors.<\/p>\n<p>Orbital ATK\u2019s Pegasus air-launched rocket is seen as the leading option for sending&nbsp;IXPE into low Earth orbit. There\u2019s a chance such a launch could involve Vulcan Aerospace\u2019s Stratolaunch system, which is expected to go into operation by 2020 with backing from Seattle billionaire Paul Allen.<\/p>\n<p>By selecting IXPE, NASA passed up the two other Explorer-class finalists: PRAXyS, which would have used a different set of instruments to study polarized X-rays; and SPHEREx, which would have conducted an all-sky infrared survey to look for the signature of cosmic inflation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An artist\u2019s conception shows the accretion disk around an active black hole.
