For a time, the Internet was agog over Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s claim that he\u2019s getting a ticket to Mars \u2013 presumably as part of SpaceX billionaire Elon Musk\u2019s plan to send a million people to the Red Planet over the next century.<\/p>\n

Then the truth came out: The Oscar-winning star of \u201cTitanic\u201d and \u201cThe Revenant\u201d was only joking. Which you could have figured out immediately by watching the video of Monday\u2019s repartee with President Barack Obama and climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe.<\/p>\n

Mars came up during Obama\u2019s meet-up at the South by South Lawn festival, which preceded a showing of DiCaprio\u2019s documentary on climate change, titled \u201cBefore the Flood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hayhoe was saying how important the climate issue was for everyone on the planet.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the most insidious myths I feel like we\u2019ve bought into is that I have to be a certain type of person to care about climate change, and if I am not that person, then I don\u2019t care about it because I care about these other things,\u201d she said. \u201cBut the reality is that if we\u2019re a human living on this planet \u2013 which most of us are, yup? As long as we haven\u2019t signed up for the trip to Mars. I don\u2019t want to know if anybody has \u2013 I think you\u2019re crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did,\u201d DiCaprio cracked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you did? Oh, I\u2019m sorry, I take that back,\u201d Hayhoe said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, I think he\u2019ll acknowledge he\u2019s crazy,\u201d Obama joked. \u201cHe\u2019s fine with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trio went on to discuss the values behind climate activism. \u201cIf we\u2019re a human living on this planet, this is the only planet we have,\u201d Hayhoe continued. \u201cIt\u2019s our home.\u201d (Check out the full exchange starting at about 1:15:30 in this YouTube video.<\/p>\n

Hayhoe was clearly referring to the plan that Musk announced last week in Mexico, which would involve sending settlers to Mars on giant rockets to turn humanity into a multiplanet species.<\/p>\n

Not that SpaceX\u2019s founder has anything against Earth, or against addressing climate change: In fact, he favors instituting a tax on carbon emissions to encourage cleaner technologies (like the solar-power systems installed by one of his favorite companies, SolarCity). Musk just wants to help create a cosmic insurance policy against climate catastrophes, asteroid strikes or other doomsday scenarios.<\/p>\n

Although Musk estimates that the cost of a ticket (including an optional return trip) might eventually amount to somewhere between $100,000 and $200,000, he\u2019s not taking reservations yet.<\/p>\n

However, DiCaprio does have a different kind of date with outer space: He\u2019s holding a reservation for a suborbital trip on Virgin Galactic\u2019s SpaceShipTwo rocket plane, which could be blasting off with paying passengers in the next year or two.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
