(Credit: Microsoft via YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s not easy to crawl through the guts of a World War II bomber, but a new virtual reality project from Microsoft and Seattle\u2019s Museum of Flight turns it into a snap on a screen.<\/p>\n<p>The Aviation Pavilion Virtual Tour is actually a series of VR tours, highlighting interior views of planes ranging from the B-17F Flying Fortress and the B-29 Superfortress to Boeing\u2019s 737 and 747 jets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time, visitors \u2013 both on site as well as remotely \u2013 will be able to \u2018step inside\u2019 the cockpits and interiors of these carefully preserved artifacts through high-fidelity 360-degree virtual tours,\u201d the museum says.<\/p>\n<p>There are clickable screen tours that were created from scans with the Matterport 3D Camera. The interface is similar to Google Street View: Click on the vantage point you want to get to, and you\u2019re there.&nbsp;You can also use arrow keys to navigate, or zoom out to see the full floor plan or \u201cdollhouse\u201d in a cutaway display.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a score of 360-degree panoramas captured by photographer Lyle Jansma. You can twist and turn your vantage point on a computer screen \u2013&nbsp;or set the imagery into VR mode, optimized for Homido goggles&nbsp;(which happen to be available at the Museum of Flight\u2019s store).<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Behind the Scenes \u2013 Step Inside the Museum of Flight\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ANwDO3FA5p0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-ratio=\"0.5625\" data-width=\"800\" data-height=\"450\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px; width: 800px; height: 450px;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The museum\u2019s docents and volunteers will be using Microsoft Surface Pro tablets to show off the 3-D imagery, and museumgoers can also peek through&nbsp;Lumia 950 smartphones equipped with VR gear.<\/p>\n<p>Virtual reality has been on the Museum of Flight\u2019s agenda for more than a year. At last November\u2019s Space Fest, VR developers from Valve showed off a virtual reality environment from Mars, based on imagery from NASA\u2019s Curiosity rover and adapted for the HTC Vive system.<\/p>\n<p>The Valve team also put together a VR rendering of the comet currently being studied by the European Space Agency\u2019s Rosetta mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe response to the test run was overwhelmingly positive,\u201d museum developers reported.<\/p>\n<p>Now a VR rendering of the museum\u2019s full-size space shuttle trainer is in the works.
