(Credit: IMAX)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The video trailer for \u201cVoyage of Time\u201d provides a trippy taste of a movie that\u2019s been more than 30 years in the making \u2013 and tells the story of a universe that\u2019s been billions of years in the making.<\/p>\n<p>Make that <em>two<\/em> movies: The big-screen IMAX version of Terrence Malick\u2019s film, narrated by Brad Pitt with a running time of 40 minutes, is due for release on Oct. 7. There\u2019ll also be a 90-minute version narrated by Cate Blanchett.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the difference? That\u2019s not exactly clear. The longer version is described as a \u201cpoetic and provocative ride full of open questions,\u201d while the IMAX experience \u201cimmerses audiences directly into the story of the universe and life itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Voyage of Time IMAX\u00ae Trailer\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KrNn8tlvX6Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-ratio=\"0.5625\" data-width=\"800\" data-height=\"450\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px; width: 800px; height: 450px;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The trailer released on Thursday serves as a preview of the IMAX version, and it carries echoes of Malick\u2019s \u201cTree of Life\u201d&nbsp;(in which Pitt starred) as well as \u201cKoyaanisqatsi\u201d and other trip movies. The 106-second clip is packed with plenty&nbsp;of computer-generated wonders, ranging from the cosmic web and black holes to multiplying bacteria, plus documentary footage showing natural wonders on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a cosmic experience \u2013 a hymn to the glories of nature, life and scientific discovery \u2013&nbsp;in which all the elements come together to form <span class=\"il\">Malick<\/span>\u2018s most original film to date,\u201d IMAX says.<\/p>\n<p>The voyage hasn\u2019t always been smooth: Malick has been gathering cosmic footage since the 1970s, when the project was&nbsp;known simply as \u201cQ.\u201d It was the subject of a lawsuit in 2013, when investors complained that Malick had spent nearly $6 million \u201cwith nothing to show for it.\u201d The suit was settled a year later&nbsp;with Malick\u2019s production company promising to pay an undisclosed sum.<\/p>\n<p>Now \u201cVoyage of Time\u201d is nearly ready to set sail.&nbsp;It\u2019s going to be a visual feast, to be sure. But&nbsp;will it tell a story&nbsp;that\u2019s worthy of the high-flown hype?
