In 2005, a top Russian space medicine official said women were too weak to take on a trip to Mars. Just in the past year and a half, women astronauts&nbsp;have had to fend off questions about&nbsp;hair styling&nbsp;and makeup.<\/p>\n<p>Glamour\u2019s interview with NASA\u2019s newest women astronauts \u2013&nbsp;Nicole Aunapu Mann, Anne McClain, Jessica Meir and Christina Hammock Koch&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;could easily have gone off in the same direction. Instead, it\u2019s all about following through on childhood dreams, learning how to cope with rides on the \u201cvomit comet\u201d airplane, and talking about the challenges they\u2019ll face during a trip to Mars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we go to Mars, we\u2019ll be representing our entire species in a place we\u2019ve never been before,\u201d McClain told Glamour. \u201cTo me it\u2019s the highest thing a human being can achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Note: Not \u201cmankind\u201d or \u201cwomanhood.\u201d Human beings.<\/p>\n<p>The four females are part of the astronaut class of 2013, the first class to be evenly divided between men and women. They haven\u2019t been assigned to spaceflights yet, but at least some of them are likely to be on duty when NASA starts sending astronauts beyond Earth orbit in the 2020s.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, NASA is accepting applications for the astronaut class of 2017. The deadline for applying is&nbsp;Feb. 18.
