(Credit: Spaceflight)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here\u2019s a Cyber Monday deal from Seattle-based Spaceflight for the space geek on your list: Purchase&nbsp;a satellite launch for one-third off, at the low, low price of $200,000.<\/p>\n<p>The only catch is that you\u2019ll have to wait until 2018 for the satellite to be delivered. But that\u2019s the way it is with travel plans, whether you\u2019re&nbsp;heading to&nbsp;a vacation resort or putting a 3U CubeSat in a sun-synchronous orbit 310 miles (500 kilometers) above the planet. \u201cBooking early is the best for both parties,\u201d said Phil Brzytwa, Spaceflight\u2019s business development manager.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-188079 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pluto1.png\" alt=\"pluto\" width=\"250\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pluto1.png 250w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pluto1-200x151.png 200w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pluto1-132x100.png 132w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\"><br \/>\n<strong>Science journalist Alan Boyle<\/strong>&nbsp;is the author of &#8220;The Case for Pluto: How a Little Planet Made A Big Difference.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Through the end of the year, Spaceflight is offering up to 36 CubeSat spots on the company\u2019s SHERPA satellite port at $200,000 (marked down from the list price of $295,000), and it\u2019s not clear how long they\u2019ll last.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlready this morning we\u2019ve had seven inquiries from all around the planet, and my inbox is filling up,\u201d Brzytwa told GeekWire.&nbsp;There\u2019s a limit of four CubeSats per customer.<\/p>\n<p>Brzytwa said the 3U CubeSats, each measuring 4 by 4 by 12 inches in size, would be deployed from a launch vehicle to be named later. That satellite size might sound small, but it\u2019s big enough to accommodate a deployable solar sail like the one that was tested for&nbsp;the Planetary Society\u2019s Lightsail project, or asteroid-hunting hardware like the payload that Planetary Resources arranged to have put into orbit this year.<\/p>\n<p>The arrangement for the Cyber Monday satellites would be a dedicated rideshare, which Spaceflight is also using for a SpaceX Falcon launch in 2017. \u201cThat manifest is pretty much all booked up,\u201d Brzytwa said.
