Alan Boyle, one of the most respected science and space journalists in the country, has officially joined GeekWire as our new aerospace and science editor.

Alan has been contributing stories to GeekWire in recent months as a freelancer, but he’s now shifting into an official role as a regular member of the team. As longtime followers of his work know, Alan’s stories are thoroughly reported, incisive and illuminating, and we’re thrilled to have him lead an expansion of our coverage in these areas.

A veteran of sites including msnbc.com and NBCNews.com, Alan is an award-winning journalist who has covered some of the biggest news in space and science over the course of his career. He’s the author of the book, The Case for Pluto, and he worked previously as foreign editor at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

SPACE & SCIENCE NEWSLETTER: Click to subscribe to a weekly digest of GeekWire’s space and science stories, featuring coverage by Alan Boyle.

“I’ve been a journalist in Seattle for more than 30 years, and I love the idea of working for a media outlet that’s based here and has a sense of place, but also has a national reputation,” he says. “The fact that GeekWire wants to provide more news about scientific discoveries, aerospace ventures, space exploration and how all this resonates with geek culture is a stroke of luck for me.”

He adds, “I think the rising interest in those subjects parallels this region’s rising role in the frontiers of biotech and engineering – which is completely in line with our pioneer past. I’m looking forward to documenting our pioneer future.”

Please join us in welcoming Alan Boyle to the GeekWire team. For more, we recorded a podcast with Alan this week, talking about his history on the space and science beat, his new role at GeekWire, and some of the stories he’ll be reporting about in the weeks and months ahead.

One of the most fascinating stories in technology and science these days is the emergence of a new space industry.
