(Credit: NASA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Today NASA paid off on its promise to launch a website featuring daily images from the Deep Space Climate Observatory \u2013 and it\u2019s&nbsp;spectacular.<\/p>\n<p>The refrigerator-sized spacecraft \u2013&nbsp;which has been known as DSCOVR, Triana and GoreSat, depending on the era&nbsp;\u2013 was launched in February after 17 years of ups and downs in mission development.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-188079 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pluto1.png\" alt=\"pluto\" width=\"250\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pluto1.png 250w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pluto1-200x151.png 200w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pluto1-132x100.png 132w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\"><br \/>\n<strong>Science journalist Alan Boyle<\/strong>&nbsp;is the author of &#8220;The Case for Pluto: How a Little Planet Made A Big Difference.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Environmentalist Al Gore touted the mission as far back as 1998, while he was vice president, as a way to show the world full-disk images of our beautiful home planet. That idea was scratched when Gore left office and the Republicans took over the White House.&nbsp;After spending several years in mothballs, the probe was retooled to watch for incoming solar storms as well as monitor Earth\u2019s climate.<\/p>\n<p>Since the launch, NASA has been gearing up to provide a steady flow of near-real-time color images of Earth, as seen from a gravitational balance point known as L1, a million miles out.
