Boeing\u2019s new laser system is designed to disable drones.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Drones are everywhere these days \u2014 straying onto the White House lawn and disrupting wildfire operations.<\/p>\n

Now, Boeing has developed a new laser technology designed to wipe out drones \u2014 especially those that could cause threats to military personnel.<\/p>\n

\u201cSilent, invisible and precise\u2014Boeing\u2019s Compact Laser Weapons System harnesses directed energy on its targets,\u201d Boeing noted in a press release announcing the technology after a test at Point Mugu, Calif.<\/p>\n

The company said that the system is portable, and can be set up in just a few minutes. Future versions may allow for the laser cannon, which shoots a 2-kilowatt laser, to be added to a moving vehicle or ship.<\/p>\n

\"boeing-dronesystem4\"\u201cThink of it like a welding torch, but being put on target from many hundreds of meters away,\u201d said Boeing engineer in a video describing the technology.<\/p>\n

Wired got a first-hand look at the laser technology during tests in New Mexico, describing the system as looking like \u201can overgrown camera, swiveling around on a tripod.\u201d Reporter Jordan Golsan adds that the laser system is \u201cmore like burning ants with a really, really expensive magnifying glass than obliterating Alderaan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amazingly, Wired notes that the drone killer is \u201ccontrolled with a standard Xbox 360 controller\u201d and \u201ca laptop with custom targeting software.\u201d<\/p>\n
