The principal investigator for NASA\u2019s New Horizons mission did, in an outburst&nbsp;directed at the tortuous rules that led to Pluto\u2019s reclassification as a dwarf planet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s bullshit,\u201d Alan Stern, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute, told Tech Insider \u2013 with the clear intent of being quoted.<\/p>\n<p>To call B.S. like that isn\u2019t surprising for Stern, who has worked for more than a quarter-century to get a spacecraft to the mysterious world on the solar system\u2019s edge. Photo via NASA\/JHUAPL\/SwRI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When you also consider that Pluto has an extended atmosphere and five moons, who could consider it anything but an honest-to-goodness planet?<\/p>\n<p>The International Astronomical Union, that\u2019s who.<\/p>\n<p>Nine years ago, only months after New Horizons was launched, members of the IAU approved a hastily drawn-up set of rules that defined planets as objects that go around the sun, are big enough to crush themselves into roundish balls by the force of gravity alone, and have \u201ccleared the neighborhood around their orbits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They said Pluto didn\u2019t satisfy that third, ill-defined condition. That\u2019s unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the IAU\u2019s leaders have repeatedly signaled that the last thing they want to do is revisit the&nbsp;Pluto problem. But the&nbsp;rest of us could well be unscientifically swayed by New Horizons\u2019 views of the dwarf planet.&nbsp;The&nbsp;more we get to know the planet with a heart, the less inclined&nbsp;future generations will be to shut it completely out of the planetary clubhouse. And that ain\u2019t bullshit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update for 12:45 p.m. PT July 31:<\/strong> During a follow-up phone call, Stern told GeekWire that even he doesn\u2019t expect the IAU to change its mind. \u201cI think the way it\u2019s going to change is with a challenge to the IAU from an outside organization,\u201d he said.
