Andrews, also CEO of SpaceFlight,&nbsp;previously described&nbsp;SpaceFlight&nbsp;as a \u201cspace logistics company,\u201d arranging the rides for the satellites and doing the equivalent of stashing them in \u201coverhead bins\u201d and \u201cnooks and crannies\u201d on spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>BlackSky&nbsp;says it can provide high-resolution images not only faster than other&nbsp;companies \u2014 a couple hours versus days or weeks \u2014 but at one-tenth the cost of the current industry average. Its satellites will fly over most major cities 40 to 70 times a day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full-width wp-image-182623\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/BlackSky-Revisit-Rate-Heat-Map-620x305.png\" alt=\"BlackSky Revisit Rate Heat Map\" width=\"620\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/BlackSky-Revisit-Rate-Heat-Map-620x305.png 620w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/BlackSky-Revisit-Rate-Heat-Map.png 1149w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe satellite constellations of other commercial companies typically measure five satellites or fewer and are located in very specific, sun-synchronous orbits that are ideal for mapping,\u201d Andrews said. \u201cBlackSky Global\u2019s 60 satellites will operate in mid-latitude orbits to provide more frequent revisit rates over 95 percent of the Earth\u2019s populated area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-182625\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/BSG-Logo-August-2014.png\" alt=\"BSG Logo - August 2014\" width=\"241\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/BSG-Logo-August-2014.png 241w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/BSG-Logo-August-2014-200x102.png 200w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/BSG-Logo-August-2014-150x77.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\">Andrews noted that BlackSky\u2019s constellation will complement existing service providers, \u201cenabling a new level of global awareness by providing images of the Earth in near real-time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe view these other companies as customers \u2014 not competitors \u2014 by providing them with additional, complementary imaging capacity that they can sell using their distribution channels,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Customers&nbsp;hail from a variety of industries like geography, research, resource management, intelligence, geospatial technology, weather, disaster response, human rights, construction and development, media, national security, defense and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlackSky\u2019s customers use its services to enable or grow their businesses because they eliminate the need to capitalize a large constellation of high-resolution spacecraft,\u201d Andrews said.<\/p>\n<p>BlackSky makes money with a \u201cpay-per-picture\u201d business model and is developing a platform that will allow&nbsp;customers to rapidly request, receive, and interact with satellite imagery via the Internet. The company employs less than 20.<\/p>\n<p>BlackSky joins a handful of other Seattle-based space companies, which include Boeing, Blue Origin, Planetary Resources, and others.
