(Credit: Blue Origin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos is promising to keep moving forward with the program despite the loss of its unmanned test spacecraft last week in the skies over West Texas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the outcome any of us wanted, but we\u2019re signed up for this to be hard, and the Blue Origin team is doing an outstanding job,\u201d writes Bezos in a message on the Blue Origin site, only his second update there in nearly four years. \u201cWe\u2019re already working on our next development vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Addressing what happened, Bezos writes that the test spacecraft was flying at Mach 1.2, at an altitude of 45,000 feet&nbsp;when a \u201cflight instability drove an angle of attack that triggered our range safety system to terminate thrust on the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That led to its destruction.<\/p>\n<p>After the Wall Street Journal broke the news of the incident&nbsp;&nbsp;yesterday,&nbsp;Forbes talked to residents of the area&nbsp;who witnessed the incident and described an explosion and a stream of smoke in the sky.<\/p>\n<p>Bezos notes that last week\u2019s test incident followed a successful flight of the same vehicle three months earlier. The test vehicle doesn\u2019t carry a crew. Bezos explains in his message that the company is \u201cworking on the sub-orbital crew capsule separately, as well as an orbital crew vehicle to support NASA\u2019s Commercial Crew program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blue Origin is based in Kent, Wash., south of Seattle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blue Origin&#8217;s test vehicle in flight prior to the incident last week.
