But for the 50th anniversary of the Seattle landmark, organizers are thinking much bigger \u2014 and higher.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14236\" title=\"spaceneedle\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/spaceneedle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/spaceneedle.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.geekwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/spaceneedle-200x133.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\">The Space Needle this morning announced an elaborate sweepstakes and competition that will ultimately send one lucky winner on a suborbital spaceflight, through the Space Adventures space tourism company.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone can enter the sweepstakes for a chance to become one of 1,000 people eligible to compete for the grand prize.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re calling it the \u201cSpace Race 2012.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Space Needle was built when our country was in a global space race,\u201d says Ron Sevart, president of the Space Needle LLC, in a news release. \u201cWith space travel moving to the private sector, a new race has begun that focuses on the best of what the Space Needle has become a symbol of the aspirations of today\u2019s world of technology and science. What better way than sending a person from our midst into space to mark our first 50 years and look into the exciting future that lies ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sweepstakes will award other prizes along the way.
