Former NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine will become chief executive of Quantum Space, a company focused on in-orbit maneuverability and satellite servicing technologies.<\/p>\n
Bridenstine, who led NASA from 2018 to 2021, said the new role aligns with his background in national security and defense. \u201cThat\u2019s where my background is, and where my heart is,\u201d he said, describing the move as a return to his core areas of expertise.<\/p>\n
Before his tenure at NASA, Bridenstine served as a U.S. Navy pilot, flying combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan from the USS Abraham Lincoln, and later operated F-18 aircraft. He also held roles in the Navy Reserve and the Oklahoma Air National Guard. In 2012, he was elected to the U.S. Congress, serving on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee.<\/p>\n
At Quantum Space, Bridenstine will oversee development of technologies aimed at improving satellite maneuverability. The company\u2019s Ranger spacecraft is designed to refuel other satellites and operate using both chemical propulsion for rapid response missions and electric propulsion for longer-duration operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt really, I think, changes how we think about sustained maneuver for orbital operations,\u201d Bridenstine said. \u201cI thought this was a really unique opportunity to do something that could be transformational for space.\u201d<\/p>\n
Quantum Space is part of a portfolio led by investor Kam Ghaffarian, which includes Axiom Space, Intuitive Machines and X-energy. Bridenstine said the company is expected to gain increased attention as defense-related space requirements evolve.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow that that\u2019s behind him, Kam has said [Quantum Space] is his next big project,\u201d Bridenstine said. \u201cAs the requirements of the Space Force continue to evolve\u2026I think it will absolutely be a much higher-profile company as time goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n
As part of the leadership transition, current CEO and co-founder Kerry Wisnosky will take on the role of president, while Ghaffarian will serve as executive chairman of the board.<\/p>\n
Bridenstine\u2019s consulting firm, The Artemis Group, will continue operations, with senior partner Gabe Sherman set to become managing partner.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
