Under the agreements, Spacecoin will supply satellite infrastructure and core technology, while working with local partners to manage ground operations and provide user support.

Spacecoin has been testing its concept of a permissionless, decentralized internet delivered from space. In November, the company launched three satellites and previously said it successfully transmitted a blockchain transaction from orbit as part of its proof-of-concept demonstrations.

In Kenya, Spacecoin said it has secured a transmission licence from the Communications Authority of Kenya to provide satellite-based internet-of-things monitoring services and expand connectivity in underconnected areas. In Nigeria, the company is building on an existing licence from the Nigerian Communications Commission to support plans for low-cost, high-speed connectivity in rural communities.

In Southeast Asia, Spacecoin has entered into a strategic partnership with Cambodian internet service provider MekongNet to deliver satellite internet access to rural and underserved populations. The company is also working with local partners and government agencies in Indonesia on similar connectivity initiatives.

“Regulatory bodies in key regions are recognizing that decentralized satellite technology can deliver the scalability and affordability traditional infrastructure can’t,” said Tae Oh, founder of Spacecoin. “These agreements confirm that Spacecoin has moved beyond being just an idea, but a real movement with momentum that will unlock permissionless connectivity through open-sourced satellite technology, powered by people and built for people.”

The pilots come as satellite-based broadband and IoT services attract growing interest from governments and development agencies seeking alternatives to costly terrestrial infrastructure in remote regions.
