{"id":20198,"date":"2026-06-24T18:08:36","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T10:08:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/esa-astronaut-tests-eurosuit-prototype-aboard-iss-as-development-program-advances\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T18:08:36","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T10:08:36","slug":"esa-astronaut-tests-eurosuit-prototype-aboard-iss-as-development-program-advances","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/esa-astronaut-tests-eurosuit-prototype-aboard-iss-as-development-program-advances\/","title":{"rendered":"ESA Astronaut Tests EuroSuit Prototype Aboard ISS as Development Program Advances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A prototype of the European-developed EuroSuit intravehicular activity (IVA) spacesuit has undergone testing aboard the International Space Station (ISS), while a parallel water survival campaign has been completed on Earth as part of the suit\u2019s ongoing development program.<\/p>\n<p>The EuroSuit initiative was launched by the French space agency CNES in late 2023 and is being developed by a consortium led by Spartan Space, alongside the Institute of Space Medicine and Physiology (MEDES) and sporting goods company Decathlon.<\/p>\n<p>An early prototype of the suit was delivered to the ISS in May 2026 aboard a SpaceX cargo mission operating under NASA\u2019s Commercial Resupply Services program.<\/p>\n<h2>In-Orbit Evaluation on the ISS<\/h2>\n<p>During testing aboard the ISS, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot evaluated the prototype\u2019s usability and comfort in a microgravity environment.<\/p>\n<p>According to NASA operational updates, the testing focused on assessing how quickly the suit could be donned, with developers targeting a dressing time of less than two minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Adenot also evaluated mobility, ergonomics, comfort, and the ability to interact with equipment while wearing the suit.<\/p>\n<p>Following the tests, she documented her observations to support engineering assessments and future design improvements.<\/p>\n<h2>Multiple Test Sessions Planned<\/h2>\n<p>The ISS campaign includes a series of evaluation sessions designed to measure improvements in the ease and speed of putting on and removing the suit.<\/p>\n<p>The testing forms part of a broader effort to validate the concept before advancing to a more mature design phase.<\/p>\n<p>The prototype used aboard the ISS is intended solely for testing purposes and will not return to Earth.<\/p>\n<h2>Water Survival Campaign Completed<\/h2>\n<p>In parallel with the orbital testing, Spartan Space completed a water survival test campaign in Marseille.<\/p>\n<p>The exercises included buoyancy assessments, emergency egress procedures, life raft boarding operations, and simulated recovery scenarios involving helicopters and rescue vessels.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company, the tests produced encouraging results that will support further qualification activities.<\/p>\n<h2>Next Development Phase<\/h2>\n<p>The consortium is now working on a final ground-based version of the EuroSuit that will incorporate lessons learned from both the ISS and water survival campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>This phase is expected to continue through 2027 and will serve as a foundation for the future development of a flight-certified version of the spacesuit.<\/p>\n<p>The project is part of broader European efforts to strengthen independent human spaceflight capabilities and develop technologies for future missions in low Earth orbit and beyond.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A prototype of the European-developed EuroSuit intravehicular activity (IVA) spacesuit has undergone testing aboard the International Space Station (ISS), while a parallel water survival campaign has been completed on Earth as part of the suit\u2019s ongoing development program.
