This move marks the company’s strategic foray into the U.S. market.

According to former Iceye US CEO Jerry Welsh, who serves on the board of Kuva Space US, the selection of Fairfax is a strategic decision. He stated, “Strategically positioning ourselves at the heart of the intelligence community and in close proximity to Washington D.C. and maritime security services customers based in Maryland” is crucial. He further added that these locations represent three key markets that Kuva Space aims to engage, develop strong relationships with, and build collaboration and support.

Last year, Kuva Space successfully raised 16.6 million euros ($17.6 million) in a Series A funding round. The company’s roadmap includes launching two hyperspectral imaging satellites in 2024 and offering daily hyperspectral monitoring by 2026. By 2030, Kuva Space aims to provide three daily views of sites.

Welsh emphasized the company’s commitment to providing cutting-edge services tailored to meet security and regulatory requirements in the U.S. market. He stated, “Over the next year, we will be expanding in the U.S. to provide cutting-edge, robust, and reliable services and meet security and regulatory requirements to become a trusted partner to the U.S. government.”

Kuva Space stands out due to its continuous stream of data acquired by its satellite constellation, eliminating the need for manual tasking. Additionally, the company is developing hyperspectral cameras with in-orbit tuning capability and an artificial intelligence-based analytics platform.

The move reflects a broader trend of Earth observation companies establishing a presence in the United States, driven by the country’s status as the largest space and defense market. Kuva Space sees potential opportunities in serving customers like the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

Welsh highlighted the NRO’s recent agreements with hyperspectral satellite imagery providers under the Strategic Commercial Enhancements program. He stated, “The NRO hyperspectral awards are a strong indicator of government interest in exploring various types of space-based hyperspectral capabilities.”

Kuva Space, a Finnish startup, has announced its intention to establish Kuva Space US in Fairfax, Virginia, as of February 7th.
