{"id":20525,"date":"2026-05-20T21:32:33","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T13:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/astrolab-to-send-scientific-payloads-to-lunar-south-pole-on-flip-rover-mission\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T21:32:33","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T13:32:33","slug":"astrolab-to-send-scientific-payloads-to-lunar-south-pole-on-flip-rover-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/astrolab-to-send-scientific-payloads-to-lunar-south-pole-on-flip-rover-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Astrolab to Send Scientific Payloads to Lunar South Pole on FLIP Rover Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Astrolab is preparing to send a series of scientific payloads to the Moon later this year aboard its FLIP rover mission aimed at supporting future lunar exploration near the Moon\u2019s south pole.<\/p>\n<p>The company said its FLEX Lunar Innovation Platform rover, known as FLIP, will carry multiple research instruments designed to study lunar surface conditions, regolith composition and environmental impacts on exploration systems.<\/p>\n<p>Several of the payloads are backed by NASA and are intended to support future Artemis programme operations on the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p>Among the payloads is a multicolour camera and radiometer developed by NASA Ames Research Center and Interlune to estimate concentrations of helium-3 within lunar regolith.<\/p>\n<p>The mission will also carry a laser retroreflector array from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center designed to enable precision rover tracking without requiring onboard power or maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Another payload from Johnson Space Center will measure lunar dust levels and assess how regolith affects systems such as solar arrays and thermal radiators.<\/p>\n<p>A lunar LiDAR demonstrator from NASA Marshall Space Flight Center will also be deployed to generate high-resolution three-dimensional maps of the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p>Astrolab said the FLIP mission will serve as an early technology and operational demonstration ahead of development of its larger Flexible Logistics and Exploration rover platform, known as FLEX.<\/p>\n<p>The larger rover is intended for future commercial lunar missions and NASA\u2019s Artemis programme, supporting astronaut transport, logistics operations and lunar infrastructure activities.<\/p>\n<p>Jaret Matthews, chief executive of Astrolab, said the mission would support broader lunar exploration goals.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re honored to deliver NASA\u2019s instruments to the lunar surface,\u201d Matthews said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith FLIP, we can provide a nimble, mobile platform that enables multiple NASA investigations in one mission.
