BlackSky Technology has released the first images from a recently launched Gen-3 satellite, reporting that it delivered imagery less than 24 hours after reaching orbit. The company shared an image captured on 22 November showing thousands of vehicles at the Port of Jebel Ali in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n
BlackSky did not publicly disclose the launch beforehand but confirmed to Via Satellite that it was the previously unnamed customer on Rocket Lab\u2019s Electron mission last week. The company said the new spacecraft has already demonstrated fully automated tasking-to-delivery capability, and that image quality will continue to improve as the satellite completes final calibrations and reaches its operational orbit.<\/p>\n
CEO Brian O\u2019Toole described the 24-hour turnaround time as a significant milestone. \u201cCustomers no longer have to wait months typically associated with traditional commissioning timelines,\u201d he said. \u201cBlackSky\u2019s rapid commissioning process places tasking capacity into customers\u2019 hands quickly and increases the overall operational life of each satellite as they come online sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n
BlackSky began deploying its Gen-3 satellites earlier this year, releasing the first imagery from the upgraded series five days after launch in March. The new spacecraft are designed to collect 35-centimetre-resolution imagery with sub-hourly revisit rates, enhancing the company\u2019s real-time monitoring capabilities.<\/p>\n
COO Nick Merski said the Gen-3 series offers improved analytical value compared with its Gen-2 counterparts. \u201cYou can look at more nuanced activity around the presence of an object,\u201d he told Via Satellite earlier this year, noting the ability to distinguish between vehicle types and observe behavioural patterns over time.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
