Shares of MDA rose about 1% on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Monday, closing at C$27.67 ($19.69 USD).

The investment marks a significant step toward building an independent Canadian launch capability. While Spaceport Nova Scotia hosted a single suborbital launch in 2023, it remains in development and has yet to conduct an orbital mission. Local media reports suggest that Dutch firm T-Minus Engineering may carry out a delayed suborbital test at the facility later this month. MLS recently secured another C$10 million ($7.1 million) in funding from Canada’s government-owned export credit agency, which cited the spaceport’s potential to host Canadian defense payloads as a key reason for its support.

Canada currently relies on launch sites in the United States and Europe for its military satellites. However, increasing launch costs and congestion at global spaceports have strengthened the case for establishing domestic launch capabilities. MDA’s investment gives the company pro-rata participation rights in future financings, the option to nominate a board member, and positions it as an operational partner in Spaceport Nova Scotia.

The first orbital launch from the site has not yet been scheduled, but MLS has signed an agreement with Quebec-based Reaction Dynamics for a maiden orbital attempt as soon as the third quarter of 2028. Spaceport Nova Scotia is one of two active spaceport projects in Canada. The other, NordSpace’s Atlantic Spaceport Complex in Newfoundland and Labrador, attempted its first suborbital launches in August and September, though both were delayed due to adverse weather and technical issues.

MDA Space, one of Canada’s largest space companies, has invested C$10 million ($7.1 million) in Maritime Launch Services (MLS), becoming both an equity holder and strategic partner in the company’s effort to establish sovereign orbital launch capabilities at Spaceport Nova Scotia.
