Founded in 2020, Constellr operates a thermal imaging constellation designed to monitor activity on Earth by detecting heat signatures rather than visible features.

The company currently has two operational microsatellites, SkyBee-1 and SkyBee-2, launched on SpaceX Falcon 9 Transporter missions in January and June 2025. These satellites form the initial elements of its HiVE constellation, which provides thermal Earth observation data.

Constellr said the new funding will be used to upgrade its system to “defence-grade status,” including development of next-generation spacecraft capable of sub-5-meter resolution — a substantial improvement over the current 30-meter native resolution. The company aims to provide sovereign intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities to governments, military forces and security agencies.

“Sovereign resilience requires understanding real activity on the ground, not just seeing objects,” Chief Executive Dr. Max Gulde said. “Thermal intelligence provides the earliest and most reliable signal of operational change, from detecting rocket and airbase activity to identifying active reactors and hidden industrial operations. Europe must own this capability.”

Constellr originally targeted agricultural markets with high-precision monitoring services for crop management but said it will now prioritize defence applications.

The shift comes as Germany accelerates investment in space-based security infrastructure. The country’s armed forces have committed €35 billion to space-related defence projects through 2030, creating significant opportunities for domestic providers.

One of the largest initiatives announced so far is a €1.7 billion contract awarded in December 2025 to Rheinmetall and satellite operator ICEYE for a synthetic aperture radar reconnaissance constellation, highlighting growing demand for sovereign Earth observation capabilities in Europe.

Analysts say thermal imaging could complement radar and optical systems by revealing operational activity that is not visible through conventional sensors, particularly in low-light or concealed conditions.

Munich-based Earth observation company Constellr said on Feb. 10 it had raised €37 million in a Series A funding round, bringing its total capital raised to €75 million as it pivots toward defence-focused satellite services.
