Germany has released its first national security space strategy, outlining major investments in military space capabilities \u2014 including \u201chighly agile low-signal surveillance and bodyguard satellites\u201d and reusable spaceplanes to counter adversary threats.<\/p>\n
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius called the plan \u201can important part of Germany\u2019s efforts to safeguard its interests and consolidate its position as a responsible actor in space.\u201d<\/p>\n
The strategy confirms Germany\u2019s shift toward a more assertive defence posture, noting it will \u201cdecisively and rapidly expand its defence capabilities in space\u201d and integrate the space domain into national and NATO planning.<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. Michael Traut said Germany will \u201cenhance and replace our existing SATCOM capabilities,\u201d boost space reconnaissance, and pursue \u201csatellite-based missile detection\u201d to counter ballistic and hypersonic threats.<\/p>\n
Backed by \u20ac35 billion over five years, the plan includes developing capabilities to \u201crestrict\/prevent military use of space by an adversary\u201d and expanding Germany\u2019s role in protecting EU space systems.<\/p>\n
