According to CEO Derek Huerta, those options have required either enormous capital investment or dependence on someone else’s infrastructure, with the strategic vulnerability that comes with it.

Eclipse Space is led by Huerta, formerly senior manager of satellite payload engineering at SpaceX. The founding team includes other SpaceX alumni: former business development executive Barry Matsumori as chief commercial officer, former Starlink development lead Celena Byers, and lead supply chain engineer Dante Tay. The company was co-founded by Kyle Leveque, formerly of Astro Digital and Cambrian Works. It is backed by Space Capital, Tectonic Ventures, and Ubiquity Ventures.

The company compared its approach to Apple and the smartphone industry, in which Apple owns the architecture and builds the software while working with a network of manufacturing and integration partners. Eclipse Space said it wants to deliver constellations at a speed, scale, and level of flexibility that legacy providers cannot match. Alongside its launch, the company announced it is acquiring the engineering team behind Rendered.ai’s Agent Studio, taking an exclusive license to develop the platform and an option to acquire its underlying technology.

In Huerta’s words, Eclipse was founded to give sovereign and commercial customers constellation infrastructure built to their requirements, operated on their terms, and aligned with their strategic interests. The company frames this as a change from a market where building a megaconstellation has demanded large upfront capital or reliance on systems owned by others.

What to watch is whether Eclipse Space secures customers for its sovereign and commercial constellation model, and how it develops the Agent Studio platform it is acquiring from Rendered.ai, including whether it exercises its option to acquire the underlying technology.

The startup positions itself as an alternative to two existing paths for building a megaconstellation, both of which it describes as flawed.
