What was just suppose to be a five flight test campaign, Ingenuity has moved on to operating as Perseverance\u2018s scout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in recent flights, Ingenuity has returned to its test flying roots as it conducted several altitude and speed tests in the Martian atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOver the past nine months, we have doubled our max airspeed and altitude, increased our rate of vertical and horizontal acceleration, and even learned to land slower,\u201d said Travis Brown, Ingenuity\u2019s chief engineer, in a JPL blog.<\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<script type=\"text\/plain\">\n\t\t\twindow.adSlotsConfig = window.adSlotsConfig || [];<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tadSlotsConfig.push( {\n\t\t\t\tslotID: '\/1049447\/Outbrain',\n\t\t\t\tslotName: 'div-gpt-ad-outbrain-ad-39273',\n\t\t\t\tsizes: [300, 250],\n\t\t\t\tslotPosition: 'mid_article'\n\t\t\t} );\n\t\t<\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ingenuity was originally just a tech demonstrator, built from off the shelf parts and limited to rather conservative flight parameters. While it also adds more complications, like how does it land accurately enough to collect them off the ground, it would be much faster than small rovers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One item NASA has already been developing are new blades that are longer and spin much faster than Ingenuity\u2019s. A recent test used JPL\u2019s 25-foot-wide space simulator to spin new carbon-fiber rotor blades nearly at the speed of sound, mach 0.95.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe spun our blades up to 3,500 rpm, which is 750 revolutions per minute faster than the Ingenuity blades have gone,\u201d said Tyler Del Sesto, Sample Recovery Helicopter deputy test conductor.
