Launched in 2011, Juno inserted itself into Jovian orbit in 2016 after completing an Earth-powered gravity assist in 2013.&nbsp; Since reaching Jupiter, Juno has completed 37 passes around the gargantuan planet.&nbsp; Data collected from these flyby\u2019s offer a new glimpse deep into Jupiter\u2019s atmosphere. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Belts and Zones<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jupiter is characterized by its signature gaseous stripes.&nbsp; These reddish-orange and white bands, known respectively as belts and zones, are separated by quickly moving winds that travel both eastward or westward.&nbsp; Great vortices, including the infamous great red spot, form along these boundaries.&nbsp; The belts and zones have long fascinated planetary scientists.&nbsp; Using data collected by Juno during its many passes of Jupiter, scientists found that ammonia in Jupiter\u2019s atmosphere moves in correlation with the belts and zones. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<script type=\"text\/plain\">\n\t\t\twindow.adSlotsConfig = window.adSlotsConfig || [];<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tadSlotsConfig.push( {\n\t\t\t\tslotID: '\/1049447\/Outbrain',\n\t\t\t\tslotName: 'div-gpt-ad-outbrain-ad-23891',\n\t\t\t\tsizes: [300, 250],\n\t\t\t\tslotPosition: 'mid_article'\n\t\t\t} );\n\t\t<\/script><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image wp-block-image--obfuscated\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png\" alt=\"Site default logo image\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBy following the ammonia, we found circulation cells in both the north and south hemispheres that are similar in nature to \u2018Ferrel cells,\u2019 which control much of our climate here on Earth,\u201d said Keren Duer, who has published work on Ferrel cells.&nbsp; \u201cWhile Earth has one Ferrel cell per hemisphere, Jupiter has eight \u2013 each at least 30 times larger.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another interesting discovery is a transition point found 40 miles beneath Jupiter\u2019s water cloud layer. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe are calling this level the \u2018Jovicline\u2019 in analogy to a transitional layer seen in Earth\u2019s oceans, known as the thermocline \u2013 where seawater transitions sharply from being relative warm to relative cold,\u201d said Leigh Fletcher of the University of Leicester, who has worked on the Juno mission.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image wp-block-image--obfuscated\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png\" alt=\"Site default logo image\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vortices and Great Red Spot<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the belts and zones, Jupiter is home to plenty of swirling vortices swirling across the atmosphere.&nbsp; Probably Jupiter\u2019s most defining feature \u2013 the Great Red Spot \u2013 has been the subject of extensive study for years.&nbsp; Finally, researchers have discovered the true extent of its size.&nbsp;
