However, this event has reinvigorated the discussion around NASA\u2019s proposed Lunar Crater Radio Telescope (LCRT). Some scientists have even suggested that an LCRT on the Moon\u2019s far side could act as a better replacement for Arecibo.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-9961\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA\u2019s LCRT proposal is essentially an ultra-long-wavelength telescope built into a crater on the far side of the Moon. Just as Arecibo\u2019s design benefited from being built into a sinkhole, an LCRT could benefit from being built into a crater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being built on the far side of the Moon would also provide a considerable upside: no radio pollution from Earth. Because the telescope would always be facing away from Earth, the Moon itself would act as a giant shield, blocking out any radio noise originating from Earth. This would eliminate one of the biggest issues that radio telescopes on Earth have always faced, discerning what signals came from Earth and which ones truly came from the darkness of space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such a telescope could also observe wavelengths greater than 10m, or frequencies below 30MHz, which Earth\u2019s telescopes cannot observe due to its ionosphere. This means that an LCRT could quickly discover new cosmic phenomena or radio signals from much earlier in the universe\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<script type=\"text\/plain\">\n\t\t\twindow.adSlotsConfig = window.adSlotsConfig || [];<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tadSlotsConfig.push( {\n\t\t\t\tslotID: '\/1049447\/Outbrain',\n\t\t\t\tslotName: 'div-gpt-ad-outbrain-ad-9961',\n\t\t\t\tsizes: [300, 250],\n\t\t\t\tslotPosition: 'mid_article'\n\t\t\t} );\n\t\t<\/script><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image wp-block-image--obfuscated\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png\" alt=\"Site default logo image\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While building an LCRT on the Moon\u2019s far side sounds like a fantastic idea, it comes with one huge caveat \u2014 that being the price of the whole project. By NASA\u2019s current estimations, it would cost somewhere in the ballpark of four to five billion dollars to fund the project.
